Japanese PS3 doesn't play the original PS1 Guitar Freaks correctly. The timing is off on the notes. That's a bit of a pisser as the game mechanics aren't exactly rocket science.

Earliar units were hardware, but the switched over to software at a later date, which is why games can look slightly better/worse depending on which machine you use.

The old looks-like-a-car-stereo-amp PS2s had a PlayStation CPU in them which was used as an input-output controller for the various sockets so had hardware BC. I'm guessing the slimline doesn't have one as it doesn't have most of the I/O sockets the original model did.

If you're playing on a HDTV it's probably the input lag from your TV rather than the console.

Or even the PS3's software scaling

I still wouldn't bank on software compatibility for PS2 games coming, though. The part-hardware emulation in the 80GB PS3s still has significant problems with plenty of games and I know from experience that the software emulation of much simpler PS1 games is far from perfect. I tried playing FFVII on my 60GB PS3 (a US one, with full hardware PS2 compatibility) and it was full of sound and graphical glitches. Flickering icons, distorted effects, stuff like that.

It could prove me wrong, though. We'll see.
From my experience with my 60GB PS3, PS2 emulation is hardly perfect either. I had Subsistence crash several times on me when I replayed it in the run up to MGS4's release.

It's possible it's just Sony's emulator because I remember hearing that music games are slightly out of sync on PSP too.

Is this an NTSC 60GB (with hardware emulation) or a PAL one (with software)? I've played quite a few PS2 games on mine (the Devil May Cry series, Persona 3, God of War II, Okami, FFXII) and never had a problem, but I suppose the PS1 compatibility on the PS2 was never 100%, so a few problems are to be expected.

Subsistance is listed as having poor compatibility on the Sony EU website, so it's hardly suprising.

It's a PAL unit. I hadn't checked the Sony website, as I thought the emulation was hardware-based and there wouldn't be any significant problems. The only other game I've replayed on the unit is Shadow of the Colossus (which didn't give me any problems).

Seems to be a combination of these problems. There were two original symptoms -

                      1. strumming at the correct position for the notes (according to the graphics) would often result in a 'miss'
                      2. even if it registered as a correct strum then the sound would be cut short, like the game was trying to play the note outside of it's allocated 'window'.

I turned off the upscaler and smoothing after reading here, and this time the graphics matched up with the controller inputs. However the sound problem remains. So yeah, I think the upscaler does potentially interfere with timing, but also the emulator isn't perfect. It's strange because I usually play GF1 & 2 on my slimline PS2, and there are no problems.
