What is the distinguishing difference for you that makes movies/film acceptable in this situation?
Films are an exception because they are non-interactive. Because they are non-interactive, they deliver a different experience. Films now try to spread themselves accross a wide range of experiences. Games are more succinct (well, at least the good ones are). With a game, the only real thing that is important is the core gameplay. Even the most beautifull graphics quickly become peripheral to a good game once you settle-in. It doesn't matter if you dress it up in a colourfull Mario world or a glib Resident Evil world, the core element that distinguishes this medium (when it works best) is the game-play element. Films have a different set of senses to appeal to.

But games are already widely accepted. They might well even have already reached their 'critical-mass'. Lets face it, no matter how much you dress the experience up, many will still have no interest, just as there are many folk who are for the most part, impartial to films and television. I'm not a big film or TV fan. In fact I probably go the the cinema once every 2 years on average, and watch practically no televison. Some mediums just don't appeal to some people. The idea taht you can 'sell to all' is preposterous. Live and let live, etc.

While games and movies are entertainment, they are capable of being thought-provoking and educating. It's a matter of content, I believe, not merely medium.

I'm not a fanatic disciple of the "Games are Art" dogma, though I feel that there's more to this form of electronic entertainment than just a fun pastime.

what an ugly bunch of covers, and judging by the URL i recon they are not even official and just some fans ideas.. first of all, i dont see the price, even when they are wrapped up they always have a price on the actual magazine too.

secondly, are the dimensions even correct? i thought edge magazine was more of a cube.

if it turns out they are the covers, i think i'll keep the ugly little bitch inside the bag

All the covers look far too simplistic and sparse in my opinion. It reeks of 'amateur'.

WHSmith did someone say? Well I popped into my local (Hereford) for Equip but the girl who runs that dept told me she had sent them back, thinking that nobody would want them. How many days had they been on the shelf? None. She just sent them straight back. She looked like a baby head bouncer (as in 'droppped on head as baby') so I didn't argue.

Currently the covers look like something I would do on Word. Of course on Excel I would add a 'whoooosh' sound with Edge flying in from the side. But that's just me all over ... classy as f*** ;-)

A lot of this can be cleared up if we just start using the correct wording. Do we mean 'childish' or do we mean 'childlike'? I know what I strive for.

Oh to see the world through the eyes of a child...

If videogames are purely escapism from miserable adult life, how do we explain Silent Hill? Surely nobody's life is worse than the world portrayed in that game?

Films are the same... nobody watched Schindler's List to 'escape'?

I'm just think out loud here.

They both effect your emotions. Shindler's List makes you feel good, that the guy helps those people out. Silent Hill is scary, gets your adrenaline pumping.

You get different hits from them in different ways... They both make you feel good some how.

The nightmares I used to have. The fear when alone that I was being chased. As fast as I ran so did the demon on my back. Lying awake at night, my bladder so full: the presence on the landing would put a chill so cold into me that I would rather wet the bed than venture from my room.

Childhood is full of unknowns. Our imagination is our closest friend, so we keep it close, and we keep it alive. Whispers in the dark, half truths. All of these form our opinions of the world. It is the greatest fear of all, the fear of the dark that we mock others for. It is the fear of the unknown.

It's a nice idea to celebrate their birthday, but it's not very reasonable. Who is going to spend almost ?40 on 10 copies of the same magazine
What's sad is that's what people on a certain other forum are doing. Edge is releasing a boxset of them all for ?40. They must be laughing.

Yeah, I read about the boxset in the Off-Topic forum earlier. IMO if someone wants to spend ?40 to complete their collection, then they should do. Futureent are bending the hardcore fans over with this terrible marketing prank though.

I can think of an awful lot of better ways to spend that money on gaming - or even non-gaming things

Went into the WHSmiths on the way to work and they had a selection of all 10 covers.

Went through them one by one and decided upon my original fave - the 1941 cover.
