    DSi question

Is the Dsi the DS 2 or is it an updated DS like a GBA micro or SP to the GBA?

    #2
Essentially an updated DS, but software that uses the DSi-specific functionality will only work on the DSi, and it's rumoured the machine may have a higher clock speed etc.

      I'd say it's a DS 1.5

It has slightly bigger screens, 2 built in cameras, built in SD card slot, improved Wireless and internal memory.
It however lacks a GBA slot.
It is fully backwards compatible with all DS games but as Shakey Jake says it's got it's own DSi-specific software too.

It seems so far DSi-specific will be either anything that uses the camera or the downloadable software for the SD card. Regular DSes can't use the DSi store, IIRC (what with no internal storage).

          Apart from....

          Face training, needs the camera
Guitar hero on tour, needs the button controller
Slide adventure mag kid, needs the optical mouse attachment
Love & berry & mushi king, needs the barcode scanner.
Juushinden beast battlers, needs the magic eye reader
Internet browser, needs the ram pak

Im sure theres a few more but those are the main ones, plus you lose the extras that putting gba games unlocked in a few other ds titles along with not been able to use the band bros expansion cart.

Not really going to be a problem for most of you but for me it is as i own a huge portion of those games so i doubt i'll be upgrading anytime soon.

Don't think of it as upgrading. Think of it as supplementing. That's what I'll be telling Mrs G!

the dsi specific software is apparently restricted to downloadable titles. i think if retail games use the camera or whatnot it will be optional

Then don't upgrade, get one as well.
You weren't actually going to sell your DS lite though were you?

Probably best that it doesn't work with Guitar Hero from what I have heard...

Hasn't it sold a shedload of copies though? And have a sequel on the way that also requires the slot?

                          Cheers for the replies

Its what i expected, but some people have been saying this is the new DS and regular DS software will be phased out in favour or DSi, i just wanted to know this would not be the case.

It will be interesting to see if this gets any major hardware updates on the inside specs wise. If that does happen i think we will see DS games slowly phased out.

Yes looking at the figures for Guitar Hero DS it has sold 1.4 million so far making it one of the most popular third party games on the system.

I doubt they will phase out old ds games for dsi stuff it would be financial suicide to do so. Considering the amount of people who own a regular ds, thats a lot of sales you would lose if you made games that only would work on the dsi. It's probably going to end up a spinoff piece of hardware with a few games that take avantage of the new features. If it becomes an obscene success & it passes the original ds for installed usebase then they may consider phasing out the old ds but somehow i dont think it's really going to happen.

mm the way i see it, its a kind of special edition ds lite. i actually cant see it selling that well, and its certainly not going to replace the ds lite.
