The inverted commas around other place make it sound so sinister!

Yeah, I had a launch model which died when it was out of warranty but they replaced it for free anyway. I seem to remember that it was possibly the day after a firmware update or even the same day which I'm thinking was the issue.

This time I'm not completely convinced that somebody in my sister's house hasn't done something unpleasant to it when she wasn't looking. It could of course just be a technical issue with the hardware which I'm sort of hoping to be true as I'd rather that than Sony finding it's been jammed full of cakes by one of the kids.

I really don't mind paying for the protection as I'm wary of the current consoles just not being stable enough. It's unfortunate but they just cram too much into too small a space which creates far too much heat and I don't see any of that changing with the next generation of consoles.

I thought the continuous play scheme had been discontinued due to being abused?

It was but they are continuing to honour existing customers policies, it's just that new people can't sign up.

My 360 died 2 weeks ago, and I was sent a replacement within a week. This was fine until the drive in that stopped working after 3 days

A bit of an update on this.

I've just returned home from work to see delivery card from the courier which is good when you consider when I spoke to Sony yesterday but bad when you consider that I'd arranged it for Friday due to their being no guarantee of people in the house.

Anyway i checked their website to arrange a new delivery and choose the pre 10am delivery for tomorrow which was a nice option as I'm not starting work until lunch time. I'm really impressed with the speed as they tried to deliver at 11:30 which is only about 15 hours after I'd reported it!

I've never known a courier deliver two days early before which is a little worrying and I did speak to two people in Sony, one before I had my policy number and one after so I'm wondering if there's a chance that I'll have another one delivered on Friday.

I'm fairly sure the courier won't give it to me if I don't give them a damaged PS3 so unless I can win them over with my "no, it's not an old plate it's one of those brand new slim PS3s" I don't really think I'll get away with it.

I seem to remember someone else on here getting a free console in exactly those circumstances, so you never know!

It seems very unlikely to happen now, the first replacement seemed to be handled in a much less officious manner.

This time it arrives inside a big sealed security case, inside there must have been about 6 or 7 inches of moulded foam with the PS3 inside a transparent & sealed security bag which I have to open and check.

I then gave him my old PS3 which is inside a carrier bag as he's not supposed to touch it and everything is resealed and I again have to confirm that this has been done in front of me.

I had to sign to confirm that everything had been done correctly and that I was happy with it. Mad but I suppose it removes the likelihood of any messing around by iffy couriers.

I asked the courier about it ad he said that it's a set process they have for returns as they also do returns for "really valuable hardware". It just seems almost impossible to somehow get a second machine out of them with this procedure.

They delivered it at 9:30 and I've had it on for a while but as I'm waiting for my 500GB hdd I'm not sure if I can be bothered downloading stuff now.

I've noticed in this that the fan almost instantly steps up from the lower speed to one of the higher speeds which worried me at first. After messing around with it for a while I'm now happy it does that, there's quite a bit of air being blown out of it but I keep testing it and it doesn't matter what I'm doing, the air stays cold but on my old model it was constantly blowing out ridiculously hot air that was actually uncomfortable to touch due to the heat.

There may be people who will correct me on this and if I am wrong then please do but I'm thinking that constant cold air coming out of the vents is a lot healthier than constant hot air? From what I've read in the past the majority of the problems with both the PS3 & 360 were down to the heat inside the consoles not escaping and causing problems and that's what makes me glad it does this.

I now just have to hope that the fan holds up to this extra work.

It is very slightly noisier now but that's only because it was completely silent the vast majority of the time in the past. Although I'd obviously prefer complete silence there's certainly no issues with the amount of noise it produces.

You're just rambling now John ;-)

Glad it's sorted. When mine failed I went through the same process of opening the secure box etc.

If the air coming out is cold, is the console getting warm? If so, I'd be worried.

I've just modified the heat shroud on my 360 and am pleased that the air coming out is now hotter and the console is cooler.

It should be hot, by the laws of airflow.

The console itself is warm but not to the extent the older version was, that used to get hot and then the fans would kick in but now there seems to constantly be more air flowing through it.

It doesn't seem to allow it to get hot like it used to as the fan is running a little faster. I'm certainly not any sort of expert on these things but I would have thought that keeping the motherboard cool is far better than letting it heat up and then powering up the fans to try and cool it down.

Maybe they just recalibrate the thermostat to a lower temperature now?
