My First Console

After arguments between my siblings and I over our gaming machines (Amstrad CPC 6128 and Commador +4) my Dad banned computer games from the house; a ban that remained until the day he left my mum for another woman. Later that week I went out and brought myself a Nintendo 64 with Turok and Mario 64. (if I waited another week I would have saved myself ?50 in a price cut) and have been an avid gamer ever since.

NES Turtles Pack - Christmas 1989

I can remember going to Toys R Us to get it. My folks couldn't find it and asked if I wanted a Master System instead but I was adamant for the NES as I was a massive Turtles fan.

Classic story...I didn't have a TV in my room so to play I would have to borrow my folks' portable. I was getting the system for Christmas and we had bought it in December so during that time, when my folks were out, I would pull the whole system out, grab the TV and play (I could almost get to level 3 on turtles by Christmas! )

Anyway, one day I was copped...How? Because I forgot to plug the RF cable back in the TV, so when the folks turned on the TV - no picture!

I can't remember exactly when I got it, but I was four or five, which would make it 1989-90. I still have it boxed with a load of games (all boxed with the screen filter things), and I think the whole bundle is worth a bit.

In fact, I believe that the machine in all the photos when Retro Gamer did a feature on the Vectrex was mine. I just know it was borrowed through a friend to be photographed for a feature, and I'm pretty sure that's the publication it was for.

Master System in 1989, brought from Woolworths for 130 pounds. They had quite a big display and there were a lot of games I recognised from the arcade. First game I got was Zillion.

The only places you could get games were Boots and Woolworths although I could also go to the local compter shop and order them from the suppliers catalogue they had in store.

Great machine and got me into gaming. 19 years later I'm still playing.

Technically not a console, but mine was the Commodore 64. Aquired in 1983 I think it was, th a copy of Hungry Horace. Didn't use it for anything but gaming.
It came to an untimeley end when I chucked it out of the window in the early 90s.
