is the aim of this thread to have an argument/discussion about them ?

I think the Halo 10s are a joke, never liked that game or thought it worthy of such high accolades.

The only 2 I think possess the magic worthy of the perfect score are the 2 Mario's, the other stuff are all good 8s or 9s

Zelda's easily worth a ten. Gran Turismo too, for it's time.

I couldn't argue with EDGE 10s until the last 18 months. Half-Life 2 and the Orange Box are highly over-rated, IYAM. Halo 3 was a return to form of sorts, but wasn't sufficiently new to warrant a 10 (based on the single-player).

GTAIV was an impressive achievement, for sure, so maybe. The only one I can whole-heartedly endorse is Super Mario Galaxy - an incredible game in every way.

          Haven't played LittleBigPlanet.

I think the 1st halo deserved it at the time though.

I disagree about the orange box. I feel that both Portal and Half Life 2 are a 9 on their own so when youre getting another 3 games with it there is tremendous value compared to virtualy every other game ever realsed. Its worthy of a 10 IMO.

As for the other games there I feel that all of them are worthy except GTA 4 and Little Big Planet, though i may change my mind on the latter if the community is still going strong in a few years time. While they are obviously very good at what they do, the GTA games just dont have good enough actual gameplay to ever be considered classic games IMO.

Don't agree with those. Half Life 2 was incredibly over-rated. It was a good little shooter but it was too short, had uninspiring weapons and too many cheesy physics puzzles.

The problem with LBP is the problem with all level editors : once you know how it's done, it loses the magic. I'm reminded of the the fun I had with the BUILD engine. When I went back to play DN3D, Blood, Redneck Rampage etc, I couldn't get immersed into it. I'd look at something and go "ah that's a sector effector 36 which activates that other sector effector to spawn some sprites..." . It's like watching a magician but in slow motion and at an angle the audience can't see.

I remember us discussing this before, but I still find it interesting. For me, notions of "value" don't really come into the score a game deserves; for example, I rate Lost Winds highly, despite the brevity of the experience.

If HL2 and Portal are worth 9/10 individually, I would say then that they are 9/10 together. Perhaps you could think about it along the lines of "greater than the sum of its parts" - since they are totally unrelated they cannot elevate the title together. For me, though, it's simply a case of being hostile to the "value" argument - I don't think you should be able win extra brownie points by simply bundling games together. Ideally, the games should be reviewed separately.

The other reason is that I think that Half-Life 2 is a little too 'average', so even if the two two scores were added together with some complex algorithm (if that's an acceptable use of the term), they still could not reach the magic 10/10.

If reviewed as a single entity, The Orange Box is easily a 10/10, there's just so much goodness in there.

However, I'm not sure it should be reviewed as one game, since it is three different games and two expansions for one of them. I wouldn't atleast.

Mario Galaxy definitely deserves that 10/10.

I wrote almost exactly that before deciding not to get sucked into an argument about 10/10s - a decision I now seem to have reversed.

Anyway - yes I agree very much with that. And even if HL2 is a 10 I'd say a score is tied to the time it was released. I'd no longer give GT or Zelda a 10 though I don't disagree with them being given that at the time. Half Life 2 is no longer a 10 if ever it was one and on the basis of your point and that the Orange Box would not get a 10.

I also don't understand the 10 for GTA IV. Don't get that at all. Nor Halo 3.

But anyway, its all just opinion right?

Still does in my eyes. Haven't played another fps since that has matched up.

                            NO - LittleBigPlanet (PlayStation 3) - E195

                            notes
of the recent ones, Halo3, GTA and LBP should get nothing more than 8's(which is still good), great games to start with but high you get is short lived and repeat play tires quickly, especially LBP.

Orangebox mainly for the value of 3 great games, HL2 on it own it i thought at the time and do now is a badly paced game with a couple few ragdoll puzzles to show of the engine, ep1 and 2 greatly improve on this.

Call me insane if you people want, but I wouldn't have said that SMG was "perfect score" material either - I just feel that it's a bit of a break from it's roots. A proper next gen Mario title set in the Mushroom Kingdom would have done that for me, it's why I was never drawn to Sunshine as I really hated Delfino.

Then again, I've played near enough none of SMG thus far, so my point may be null and void by the time I'm done with it, of course there must be some reason why I've not progressed past the first Galaxy, maybe I instinctively know already I'll dislike it.

GTA definately not worth a 10 either, the care given to the sloppy, **** smeared view distance should have dragged it down to a 9 at least. San Andreas I'd have happily given the 10 to however.
