    Handheld for Emulators...

    ...Which is better??

    PSP Slim & Lite or GP2X F200??

I've been looking for ages for something handheld to run MAME on & Just wondered which you'd spend your cash on??

I'd always been leaning towards the PSP but I've been reading up on the GP2X lately & it seems just as good so question is what should I be saving for??

    Ta in advance

The Wiz is out in February (unless it's been delayed), might be worth considering?

      psp slim every time

although mame is useless on the slim, but you have working MVS and CPS/CPS2 emus, as well as final burn alpha.

There's no major difference between the PSP and the GP2X, really. The PSP has the added benefit of playing the three PSP games that are good, I s'pose.

Might be worth waiting for the Wiz, as mentioned above, and Pandora, if it's ever able to be released, before committing though

I've not got Final Burn, if I already have the CPS emus and the MVS one are there any games exclusive to it that would make it worth tracking down?

I'm sure I've got Final Burn for the Xbox and seem to recall Neo Geo games as well as the Capcom ones.

BTW-original poster-I'd say get a PSP Slim, the screen and the performance of the emulators mentioned makes it a must buy for an emulation purpose.

Oh yeah the Megadrive and PC Engine emus are great too.

early cave games are supported on fba - but then the gp2x runs these too

            esp.ra.de. dodonpachi etc

But yea, the main thing that always turned me off the GP2X is AA batteries. also I liked being able to play PS1 games pretty much perfectly on the PSP

I've not used my psp to play ps1 games yet, is there a good guide you know of? I'd love to play Einhander or Raystorm/Ray Crisis...

Also, do the games take up a lot of space? I'm using just a 4 gig card right now and the emus have taken up all the space.

One things I find with shootemups -it's a bit dazzling to the eyes concentrating on the small screen so I tend to play beatemups when and if I ever actually use the damn thing.

Oh yeah, Shinobi on the PCE too!

thanks for all the help guys

                Kernow,

Can I just ask when using Final Burn Alph for the Cave Shooters how does it work for vert shooters??
Does the game run ok in Tate mode or do you need to change options at all??

I'm mostly interested in using whichever I buy for things like Progear, Batrider, Esp.Da.Re etc. so I want the best I can get for those sort of games.

So the Slim sounds like the best option then.

                Thanks again.

                Neil

I think it tates by default, although playing the psp physically like that is a ball ache.

psp slim is perfect for progear, honestly, I used to use mine for that mainly. it looks and plays great.

Is the 'phat' PSP that much worse? I've never tried it tbh.

I played Star Soldier "tated" on my fat PSP quite a bit, was fine to hold but the button positioning took a bit of getting used to. Once used to it it was fine, obviously the lighter the consolse the better though.

For me, the GP2X dpad is a shambles and has meant I haven't gone anywhere near it, even though I love emulation and the only thing I use my PSP for is the MD emulator.

PSP slim d-pad is as good as the PS1/2 pads in my opinion. When I had my fat PSP, I stuck one of those capcom d-pads on top and it almost felt like using a Megadrive/Saturn pad and was sublime, but I haven't bothered sticking one on my slim psp as it doesn't really need it. I do get thumb ache playing Street Fighter on it, though, but for games like Sonic, Streets of Rage, etc, it's fine for long periods.

The battery lasts a good while, and the screen is gorgeous.

My PSP was hardly used as the MD emulators weren't good enough, and this fact alone almost made me get a GP2X but shakey mentioned an updated MD emulator for PSP and by George it's perfect.

Mind you, if they can nail the d-pad, I'd buy a GP2X in a flash as it's much more versatile, especially for video playback, and seeing as I don't use my PSP for PSP games, I wouldn't be missing out on anything really.

Thats my main concern to be honest...I can picture it being a total pain to play verts properly

Hopefully I'll get used to it though.

                          Dave,

Did it take much getting used to??

Nah, wasn't too bad, just feels strange at first, using left hand for the d-pad/nub control at the bottom and right hand for the buttons at the top.

there is a video in this review of a replay of mine, had a quick look on youtube but didn't quickly see any non-zoomed in tate'd gameplay video's, it might be worth you hunting one down to see how it all works control wise. I seem to remember it was easier to use the right shoulder button for firing. We are talking about a few years ago now.

slim is far better than the phat for emulation, you don't need to make cache files for your cps2 roms anymore, but I wish it was the same for the mvs emu.

soundwave, I never played fba on my slim, I sold it before it came out.
