i think i just like to get the best out of the console. i appreciate pretty visuals but dont require them, as evidenced by the fact that the wii is my weapon of choice. but there is no way i would run it through composite. not that great a difference, but i cant stand the thought of getting less than max picture quality out of the machine.

this would translate over to older consoles too, if i ever got back into nes/n64 games i would go for a us machine or 60hz switched pal one.

I'd say most concoles now have a pretty decent output so as a rule I'm happy with what they offer. I did however used to get soooo anoyed when some games (snes / megadrive ones mainly) had ruddy great borders at the top n bottom of the screen. Stuff running at 50hz is one thing but having the game itself all squished up is just wrong .

I care. I'm not obsessive over it and don't have the greatest setup in the world but I care. Why wouldn't I? If I can get a better picture easily then it would be nuts not to. I can't possibly imagine why that might be considered snobbish or a problem.

I think this balanced view to PQ is the best of both worlds. You get the benefits of having invested a bit of time and money to it, but aren't a slave to perfection.

I have a fairly decent setup, but I don't have a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player. To some AV heads this will sound like sacrilege, but I get all my HD films from either the 360 marketplace or Virgin's pay per view. I know the quality isn't quite as good as BR, but it's conveniant and most modern films I only watch once anyway.

Besides, if it's a good film, once I get over the initial wow factor, I soon forget if a film is in HD anyway.

I care when it affects my gameplay.
That means 60Hz is/was much preferred, SCART was better as then I can actually see what is happening.
But I will, usually, turn effects off if it gives framerate advantages.

I'm not as anal as some on here when it comes to techy stuff, but I do try and get the best picture I can if the cables are readily available.

Also I have became something of a full screen/full speed fiend for my retro games. I love the Snes running at full speed, after being a kid and having a pal unit. You do notice the difference on some games.

I consider the Wii in Component to be the benchmark for image comparisons and I'm fine with that so generally the willy waving with resolutions doesn't bother me. I've no interest in another step of HD coming out, spins on projection like 3D, replacements for Blu-Ray (still don't consider it enough of an improvement over DVD) or even another generation of consoles this side of 2015.

I loved all my N64 games in PAL, but as soon as I tried the faster versions with no borders, I had to sell my collection and change to NTSC. i.e. I would have been happy if I'd never seen the difference.

On games I like such as 1080 and Excitebike64, the difference is immense.

I do, I want my games (and movies) to look the best they possibly can. Nothing wrong with that, also nothing wrong with people who don't really care.

I used to run my consoles through RGB SCART. I was so pissed, back in the day, when NCL didn't bother to include a RGB output on the N64. Had to mod mine. Of course, these days HDMI, and the like, mean we don't have to worry about getting the best picture.

An amusingly flippant first post.... How can someone be so lazy they don't bother adjusting the colour/contrast/brightness/sharpness of their TV....

Now I understand if someone doesn't know better. In a hardcore forum like this though, I imagine everyone is educated on connectors and signal types, so hopefully you're all running HDMI now.

Some people just don't notice the difference until they're sat with two images side by side. I used to be on a crusade to get my people hooked up via SCART rather than composite. I took my PS2 round a mates once, and hooked it up to his CRT. The blacks were blue! It looked awful, losing depth in picture. I pointed this out to him, but he didn't see it; it didn't help his wife is a right bitch and started complaining because I'd dared "insult" their TV Anyway, hooked it up to his TV upstairs, and THEN he immediately saw the problem. He bought a new TV

Even now, I've known a few people with 40" HD TVs and a PS3/360 hooked up via composite! The mind boggles. And then you get them to hook it up with an HDMI, and some say, "Yeah it looks a bit better suppose". They literally can't see the difference.

With a new TV I'll also spend 10 minutes going through basic settings to get the image right - blacks, contrast, skin tones, etc. Just the basics, well worth the effort. I do that for friends as well; though some people always prefer the garish levels TVs come with out of the box.

Given that video games are a highly visual medium, you may as well get the most of the experience. If nothing else, seeing things clearer would make you a better gamer in the competitive sense.

As for topic...when the medium you have as a hobby is a visual one, how can you not care about the quality of those visuals?

I think Ps3 , DC and XBOX 360 had spoiled me on 32 inch LCD HDTV and I find it hard to play non HD games. But again graphics quality of games is important. I hope my upcoming plasma TV will allow me to enjoy Wii, xbox and PS2 games and so on.

Thinking about this more I guess I am a bit of an eye candy whore but (and there's always a but!!) it's pretty short lived. For example whenever I turn my Wii on I'm shocked at quite how poor it looks (spend way more time on my 360) but after a few minutes of playing it I soon forget about the look of the games and still enjoy playing on it .

But we're not talking about Graphics, we're talking Picture Quality. To me, they're hugely different.
