It is a standard but as Darwock has pointed out and covered rather well It is more rife in FFXI. I eventually left as it seemed that not many people were playing for fun anymore, merely for performance and stats.

OK so yes a perfect party can get certain things done quicker but if none of you are having as much fun then why not use the party that would take slightly longer.... it was just not a done thing.

I think they will definitely keep the subjob aspect as like you say it is one of the things that does set it apart.

Is everyone likely to be picking this up on the PC, or will there be plenty of PS3 people as well? I know (Assume anyway, as FFXI does) you'll be able to play with each other, but I would imagine it would be beneficial to keep a party to the same platform (Unless the PS3 version supports KBM, which would be amazing) for performance parity in control?

Never played FFXI, but always wanted to give it a try. I love the idea that you can just have a single character and then set him up for different jobs. One of the major problems I've always had with MMOs (And I'm dreading it when Sacred 2 turns up as well) is that it takes me ages to find a character I really like and settle down to play it exclusively.

Raids in WoW are pretty bad for "you do your job and you do it exactly!"

I do wish more MMOs tried to make it so that you weren't shoehorned in to doing an exact thing and you had genuine freedom to play your role how you see fit rather than relying on using certain macros and add ons and studying about raid boss tactics.

I'll be getting both but I don't imagine there will be any problems with people playing across formats. Certainly when I play FFXI it's impossible for me to tell whether my party members are playing on PS2, PC or 360 based on their performance.

Ah, that sounds good then. The only games I've played to any great extent are City of Heroes and WoW, and neither of those would be manageable with a controller. Good news.

That's probably the difference. FFXI was designed with a controller as the primary method of control (PS2 initial release) so they just adapted those controls for the PC release to keyboard commands (and allowed gamepad support which worked identically to the PS2 game).

The game has rudimentary mouse support but it's just fo a cursor and not useful at all. I play with just the keyboard and wouldn't have it any other way.

I imagine with this being developed with the PS3 in mind, there won't be any major differences in approach.

OK, now I'm really excited about this. Looks like the PS3 might be spoilt for MMOs over the next 12-18 months or so!

The only difference between versions would be the aforementioned 'external aids'... unless of course your PS3 has a gammy keyboard llllllllllllllliiiike I hhhhhad foooooooooooooooorrrr my PS2222222.

If I do weaken I will be getting this for PS3, I just can't get into games on my PC as I feel like I'm at work or something.

You'd hope that this time around they will implement measures to prevent people cheating with tools (perhaps with a third-party solution along the likes of Punkbuster).

Hopefully they will, the only thing I will say though is it should be alt tabable this time, I use the Windower on FFXI for this reason only, so I can check email or read forums while looking for a party.

They're just grabs from the trailer, aren't they? It'll be a long time before we see an MMO that looks that good.

On another note, I love the design. I'm no huge FF fan by any stretch, but of those that I've played FFIX is my favourite, just because of the art style.
