I don't like 3rd person games in general so would have to say yes.

I will give the new Assasins Creed & Uncharted a chance tho I promise!

Do any footie games offer a 1st person viewpoint?
Its not, a good FPS will generaly have a life like feild of veiw (unless youre suppose to be wearing some kind of head gear, but again thats realistic). I doubt either of us have ever been shot at by multiple enemies in a war torn battle field where everyones hiding behind cover, so perhapse its a moot point, but I personaly feel the first person veiw, and the confusion it creates, is far more of an acurate representation than the third person veiw, which in many ways gives your characther their very own spidey senses...

And yeah, some football games have tried first person veiwpoints, infact there was a PS1 game that was first person only, i forget the name, but they have never been that sucsessful imo, though i'm sure it COULD work.

Namco's Libero Grande. It was a bit bobbins.

TBH I never really think about the viewpoint of a game in my purchasing decisions. Whether a game is first person, top down or side on, it's whether it does what it does well that I'm interested in.

Bioshock, just to elaborate is a good case in point for me.

Lots of hype in the media, and a friend recommended the demo.

          Downloaded it.

          I loved:
          1. The atmosphere and setting
          2. The story intrigued me
          3. The Big Daddies (looked damn scary)
          4. The pipe-mania mini-games
          5. The whole Deus Ex (I LOVE Deus EX!!!) feel
          6. The fact that you can level up

          I disliked:
          1. The gunplay and gunplay mechanics
          2. Funny AI of the (admittedly deranged) citizens

So, here was game that probably most losely resembeld Deus Ex in the modern time. And yet the gameplay turned me off. From what I hear, the demo actually gives you some stuff that in the actual game you have to wait to later on to acquire. I still have vivid memories of having a fight in a bathroom, with a gun turret on my side, and being distinctly underwhelmed.

So I passed. It wasn't too long either before you pick it up for ?15. I still passed.

Perhaps if it had 3rd person mechanics, I may have preferred it. And let's face it Bioshock is not a strict FPS. Its selling point is its atmosphere and setting. Which still could be preserved in the 3rd person.

One advantage that 3rd person games have over First person is that you can either:

            1. Block attacks
            or
            2. Take cover somewhere
            or
            3. Jump (literally) out of trouble.

All handy when you're under the cosh. Such "get-outs" are rarely available in first person games. You either take the punishment, scarper, or if you're hard, kill the attacker(s).

I didn't really get the hype with bioshock, I know the environment was good and everything 'fitted' very well, I just didn't like the weapons or gameplay a great deal. Once I started firing things from my hands, I was just ...meh

All of this can be done in FPS view too. I don't even know why these aspects are being compared, theres room in videogames for both of them, some suit one aspect, others suit another.

Not in Halo or Half-life 2 you can't. Nor CoD.

You can take cover in Killzone 2 and that was 1st person.

I actually dislike 1st person perspective in general but sometimes that's just how it's meant to be. I have suffered a little with motion sickness in the past (Metroid Prime, Medal of Honour) which is probably the root cause of it. I wouldn't have KZ2 any other way though.

Someone mentioned field of view being a problem but 3rd person games are at the mercy of their camera system. My favourite action games are probably 3rd person (Metal Gear, Demon's Souls, DMC) but I can recall many frustrating experiences with lesser titles, all cos of the camera. Actually even DMC had the potential to wind me up with the way you'd be running forwards one second and backwards the next. Still love it though.

You can take cover in Halo and COD, infact its actualy vital to the gameplay that you do on higher difficulties. You cant STICK to cover, but then no one in real life can actualy stick to cover either can they? Or do the SAS provide sticky army gear now?

You can jump in Half-Life and Halo too.

You cant block attacks, but then you wouldnt be able too if the games were 3rd person, they arent that kind of game.

In terms of driving games, my split between using FP and an external viewpoint is probably 50-50. It entirely depends on the game.

Youre wrong, but I think you'd have to play the entire game to realiise it...

I'm not a massive Bioshock fan, but it wouldnt have worked in third person quite so well simply for the reason thats its a very story driven game, and the way it tells its story is by making you feel youre the characther, there are some plot twists near the end and I garuntee if you wernt litteraly in the head of the main characther they would not be half as effective.

Sorry, dude. You can't jump ut of trouble in those games.

Taking cover = running away so far that the AI doesn't chase after you, not taking cover GoW style.

NO in Halo and COD, when playing on higher difficulties, you HAVE to use cover the same way as you do in Gears Of War... or you die, the games are both cover heavy.

I'm not sure what you actualy mean by "jumping out of trouble!", though im pretty sure Ive dodged rockets by jumping out of the way in Halo more than a few times....

Fair dues, don't play anythng harder than normal. I like having the ability to rush right in shouting "Waaaahhhhhhhh!!!!! Diiiiieeeeeeeee!!!!!".

So I obviously like having the ability to defend myself when I'm in there with a "Oops, oh ****", rather than running back all the way I came with my tail between my legs.
