What's the best bomberman game ever?

Having replayed the VS CPU battle mode on the DS version of Bomberman lately I'm surprised how poor the level of intelligence the computer opponents are, even when set at 'hard' difficulty. The opponents are rarely able to kill each other becuase the competition had always blown themselves up in an act of stupidity! I swear I've seen occasions when opponents who have the ability to set remote bombs they plant and detonate them so quickly they kill themselves before they have a chance to hide away. And on the tie break when the wall closes in on them it always seems the opponents couldn't care less and often seem willing to let the wall swalllow them up to their inpending doom.

Perhaps on a handheld where the action takes place on two screens containing up to eight bombers it's difficult to configure good artificial intelligence, I don't know, but the SNES version had much cleverer computer opponents. The computer characters were sods to kill and often the time would just run out because neither opponents were able to kill the other in time. They always pick up the skulls but they hardly ever blow themselves up or let walls swallow them up. I feel fussy saying these things but it was far more enjoyable playing against computer opponents on the SNES version.

To be honest the DS version has an excellent battle mode with a comprensive range of different stages and settings, but I would love it if the computer opponents were more challenging like the SNES version. Perhaps I might have got better at the game but with the obviously different layout of the DS version it feels like I'm playing a totally new battle mode. As I am getting used to it I still get rather cheap wins.

It got me thinking, which out of the many bomberman games released over the years do people regard as the best? Bomberman has always been a classic in my opinion and like many no doubt I have bought versions for a few consoles/handhelds.

I know people have been raving about the Saturn and PC Engine versions in particular for their good battle mode but I'm wondering as well if there has been a bomberman game with a good single player mode? Perhaps Wario Blast, or maybe Bomberman 64?

In answer to my complaints with the DS version should I be looking to play Bomberman online instead and go for Bomberman Live on XBLA? Do many people play it online?

On the other hand what has been the worst Bomberman game? I've heard Bomberman Act Zero on the 360 is apparently ****e, true?

I was in love with the Dreamcast version for a long time. I adored the graphics and the unlockable heads, bodies, faces, etc that you could customise your bomberman with. I lamented heavily over my inability to actually play it online though.

Avoid the Live version. Last I played it, there was zero support for the numerous bugs. TBH it's the worst version I've played, which is a shame as Live is a great platform for it.

Any of the snes ones would be my favourites. Though they get worse after Super Bomberman 2. So 2 would be my favourite I guess. But No co-op single player mode in that.

Saturn Bomberman. I could be played with up to ten players IIRC. That mode required a couple of multi-taps, a widescreen TV and some mates. It used the Saturn's highest resolution mode ala VF2 and was surprisingly clear. I never played it with more than four people due to the fact that none of my mates owned a Saturn.

Super Bomberman 1 on the Super Famicom! So many hours spent playing that on multiplayer.

Personally I'v never had any problem with the Xbox live version and I'd rate it as my personal favorite.

The Snes ones are pretty good, but the PC engine version (latter one) is the best for single player (but having said that no Bomberman that I'v played gives a truely satisfying single player).

The bomberman act zero stinks like no ones buisness. Avoid. Like the plague.

Oh I forgot, Bomberman Advance also gave me hours of enjoyment battling my brother. Just ignore that adventure bull**** they tacked on and you will have a good time.

Don't listen to what anyone else says. There are only two great versions:

                        * Bomberman 93, PC Engine
                        * Saturn Bomberman (10-player hi-res battle with two SBom multitaps FTW!)

From play time alone Super Bomberman (SNES) wins hands down.

Honourable mention goes to Bomberman Blast (WiiWare), as you can unlock your Mii head for your Bomberman, customise the number of items for a match, and has local support for 8 players (4 Wiimotes, 4 Gamecube controllers). Magic.

Saturn bomberman without a shadow of a doubt.

Simply awesome, looks gorgeous, plays brilliantly & the story mode is even quite good.
But 10 player madness is where it's at & is utterly sublime & just as manic as you expect.

I was also partial to Bomberman Generations on the 'Cube.
Multiplayer was damn near perfect but the adventre mode was a tad pointless & painful to play at times...the intro though was fun

Bomberman Generations had a great signature tune, very infectious. But the lanky bombermen just didn't feel quite right to me.
