My thought, on reading the Edge article was "it's sick as hell, but I'd like to play it".
On second thoughts it's not too disimilar to 'Conflict Desert Storm', albeit referencing a far more specific event that raises far more emotions in most people than the Gulf War.
I think the appeal is that it satisfies people's curiosity about extreme situations. On that level it's fine but I can't see the families of the 9/11 victims enjoying it...
