For me it was Skate. The first time I tried the demo on the 360 and realised what a radical departure it was - here was a game that a) looked lovely b) controled very differently and I could just tell it was a great method and c) it was aimed at reality, whilst still somehow remaining immensely satisfying and fun.

The last of those has been missed so many times in previous gen - aiming at reality but reality isn't often fun.

For me it was in some cave in Gear of War. I saw lovely looking water, glistening rock, just lovely textures and effects. I had to turn to my girlfriend and say "look at the games today" - she replied, "Shut up you big nerd. I still prefer Oh Mummy on my old Amstrad than that!".

Ah, Charles is repeating himself I see (I nearly did the same thing).

          View distance.

Always been a bit of a "unhealthy obsession" for me really, but view distance in games has been something I take seriously, as I feel it just adds a great sense of "Being there" in games.

Operation Flashpoint 2 has a view distance of 35Km. It also models every bullet in the game, with true droppage over distance.

Playing a war game where you can snipe targets 300m away, and see the entire battlefield ahead of you has been a standout moment for me.

Good grief! I need to get this Flashpoint game (I'm another draw distance whore).

I think draw distance is why both Oblivion and Fallout really grab people this way. They've made a very special effort to have the first thing you see after coming out the indoor tutorial section be a fancy view (Oblivion actually does it in the intro sequence, but most people assume that that is FMV)

Indeed you do, but be aware it's got some bugs at the moment. Fix is at Microsoft for "Authorisation" apparently.

But yeah, taking a heli ride acorss country with your buddies on coop, setting her down and doing a village insertion is a bit special.

I've heard that the PS3 version has fallen victim to the old poor port syndrome where graphics are concerned.

Yeah, sorry I don't have much more to tell you on that front. I was just going off what a friend had told me. He has the game and has been a pished at the graphics in comparison to the 360 version. Still, he likes the game.

Seems he's right, 360 looks a fair bit better according to lensoftruth and other places. Derailment over. Thanks chaps.

For me, the awe you get in games comes from nostalgic gaming experiences.

Just running around that first planetoid in Mario Galaxy made me feel the awe and nostalgia that I felt playing Mario 64 on it's release.

Also, the graphics in PGR3 on release were amazing (went back last week and played again - they don't look as amazing as they once did *sniff*) and Gears of War aswell.
