Just remembered another which had two fairly big "wow" moments for me. Wipeout HD.

The first one was seeing videos of the original Zone Mode which apparently induced death in some overtly sensitive people and got toned down to a fraction of what it was.

The second one went something like this...
Wow, I'm as slow at playing games as my parents used to be when I was a kid! I was pulling laps on Firestar of under 2 seconds when the first game was released!!

We didn't have stabilisers in my day.

    During the war...

First one was COD2 on the Christmas/same year release. It blew me away then and I'm pretty sure a bit further down the line it would now.

      Super Mario Galaxy WOW

Last but not least, LittleBigPlanet...the joy I got out of campaign and meeting new people go through levels..definitely a wow moment and like this thread asks for..a very magical moment. That is a special game.

        This.

This was the moment that made me go out and buy a 360. I still find it breathtaking.

There's several moments from MGS4, Uncharted again was a real early surprise too. Though not for 'next-gen' reasons the opening 15 minutes or so of Bioshock also come to mind. I spent ages simply entering Rapture, I can't remember a game that enveloped you in it's atmosphere as quickly as this did.

Mario Galaxy is the only game in this gen that gave me the same magical feeling of firing up Mario 64 again for the first time.

I'd echo Crackdown as the real next gen wow moment, first time i got up the agency tower and saw the whole city was amazing

Such a joy to read. Probably the best selection of posts i've read for a long, long time. It's such a pleasant change to read gamers' enthusiasm and passion. Love it

one day after launch day my jpn ps3 arrived in the uk. i was using a portable 14" tv and i though i was getting an error because only some colours on the xmb were displaying (ps store) and the rest of the screen seemed to be black and white.

a week or so later i got a hdtv and ridge 7. amazing.

Erm.. The run up to 'The Shot' in the sniper level of COD4. Just class.

Actually pretty much all of COD4 is like that.

Having had time to think about it, I have to agree that the first 'this is something the previous gen simply could not do' moment is Dead Rising.

For all it's faults, that game is basically the starting point for this generation of games.

for me it has to be the whole of dead space extraction on wii.

boy did i not expect it to be as great as turned out to be. WOW! one amazing set piece after another.

i really had no idea Wii could do lighting/ graphics like this, and the atmosphere of the game is amazing.

I'd like to add Wii Sports to this, the moment you picked up the Wii-mote and bowled your first 10-pin go Nintendo had changed the face of popular gaming and put down a marker that both Sony & Microsoft are still playing catch up on in a lot of ways.

I forgot about this ... and what a good call. Major moment.
