If I take a look at my order history with the online retailers I use, then it tells me what I already know - 2009 has been pretty average so far.
It started quite well with SFIV, Resident Evil 5, the Cave shmups etc, and this quarter also looks a good one, maybe even a vintage one, but the summer months were very poor. If it wasn't for XBLA games (some of which were admitedly good) and DLC packs, I would hardly have spent anything since Q1.

Reading this thread has made me realize I haven't really played anything from this year extensively. Yes, I've played a little Street Fighter, Trials and and a handful of other games round friend houses but this year home gaming has been dominated by older stuff for me. Fallout, Oblivion, Civ IV, last years Prince of Persia...

I wouldn't say this year has been a poor year for gaming. I've just been to poor to participate this time round (that and having just got my PC fixed this year, catching up with some old games and gave me a new reason to start Fallout 3 again)

Little King's Story was aces. Saddened by the lack of love for it in this thread. Anyone with a Wii owes it to themselves to go to Sains and get themselves a £10 copy of it NOW!

Uncharted 2 I expect will be overall GOTY, I havn't played it yet, but I just completed the first Uncharted last weekend, and if it really is "better in every way", I don't see how any other games can really compete.

I'm in the same boat, I've just been getting 2008 releases that are finally dropping lately.

I'd like to echo the Little King's Story appreciation. Lovely game that just warms the soul. Still my GOTY, I reckon.

Yet to see much love in here for Punch Out!!!, though. Perfectly judged difficulty right the way through, and made with nothing but love for the original. Getting pasted by Glass Joe the second time I fought him was definetly a stand-out gaming moment of the year for me.

Death Smiles MBL is without doubt one of the highlights of the year. Superb conversion of a superb game.

The Beatles: Rock Band. Never owned a Rock Band game before but the Beatle fan in me took over and I bought the deluxe set on a whim. Had nothing but great times with it, single player and multi player. On top of my cds, the Anthology dvds, my guitars and songbooks, I've found yet another way to enjoy The Beatles.

Ha! I know, I can imagine the devs giggling to themselves at that... Think of all the years Glass Joe was perceived as a wimpish walkover, and then suddenly he's more tough then you! Took me a good few attempts to beat that bugger and was probably the most satisfied (from a gaming scene, ahem) i've felt in years. Awesome.

Demon's Souls for me, easily the best game I've played this year and no Uncharted 2 doesn't beat it. Batman Arkham Asylum would follow closely, then Uncharted 2 and FEAR 2 for me. Of course we've still got Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Dragon Age and Assassins Creed 2 to go yet so who knows!

Also, GTA Chinatown Wars was fantastic and a real surprise this year.

I think this is a great idea for a thread, rekindling in the mind older titles which would be lost in the Xmas weekly GOTYYYYYYYYYYYY nonsense. So good an idea, I was tempted to do it myself last month actually Though I think it should almost be by platform, as there are many people on this forum who don't have all consoles so it can get skewed.

I've played a couple of blinding games, but if I had to pick right now, I'd put down Rock Band 2 (I'm arriving a little late to the genre, I know), and Shadow Complex. KZ2 would get an honourable mention, but I have a feeling one of my three spaces will get filled by a title between now and end of the year.

I've still not played UC2 but hope it's as good as everyone is saying

Halo Wars. Ensemble had to put an rts on a console and pulled it off beautifully. That or DK Jungle Beat on the Wii.

Wow you think a few year old port of a game with unique and fun controls ported to the wii with plain standard controls deserves GOTY?

I really liked donkey kong jungle beat, back on the cube but alot of the fun factor/appeal came from the bongos. Without them it's a pretty basic platformer.
