I think with the 3DS Nintendo decided on the 3D gimmick and that pretty sealed the deal regarding most other decisions on battery, they likely thought their popularity would compensate. It probably will in the long term but it likely rammed the point home when the 3DS initially struggled. The immediate requirement to power a strengthened backlight and three screens means we'll probably never recieve a revision that has a solid run time just like the power requirements on the PSV's OLED will likely cause it issues permanently. Unless a cheaper solution appears in the next few years I wouldn't be surprised to see the 3D screen removed from Nintendo's next handheld. Hopefully the eventual PSV revision will be solid enough of an improvement. I don't think I could be bothered with the battery extension they're doing.
