Can you get wired only, official Sony PS3 pads? I don't like mine being semi-wireless...
Since Sony decided to supply the shortest mini USB cable known to man, I've only plugged my pad into my ps3 once (when I first got it) and since have used the silly short cable to charge my pad off my girlfriends laptop which is closer to me than the ps3 is.
Other than that, isn't it great when a new version of an existing and working technology is released, and doesn't work

I think when the cable is connected, the signal is sent via the wire, not the bluetooth.
This is different to the XB360 wireless controller whereby even when hooked up with a Play & Charge Kit, the controler is still communicating wirelessly.
This is why you can (with appropriate drivers) hook up a wireless DS3 to a PC via USB and it works whereas attempting to do same with an XB360 pad/P&C Kit doesn't.

Right I have another update on this as I was not convinced a replacement console would cure this.
Another call to Sony and I now have it working.
Here are the steps to perform.
1. Turn the console to standby.
2. Keep the power button held down on the console until the light goes back to red. Basically it will cycle on and then back to standby.
3. Turn the console on and keep your finger on the button until you hear a double beep. You will get a single beep first and then a double beep.
This should have completely reset the console back to default settings.
4. Connect the Controller via the USB cable and set up as you would have done from new.
5. Fingers crossed it works

I've had this problem a 2 or 3 times since the PS3 launched and I think I did have it after the firmware update. It's always been the same method to resolve it for me, it's a little different to what you're going to try but it deos me you don't have to mess around with all your settings again.
- When you get the 4 flashing lights connect the controller to the PS3 until it assigns itself as Controller 1
- Switch the PS3 off while it's still connected using the standby button on the PS3
- Switch it back on via the PS3 standby button and not the controller
- When it's all up and running switch the controller back on & it should be fine...hopefully
I'm not sure if it's the exact same problem that you're having but this worked for me each time.

I've started getting this error since 3.10. Mine's a US 60GB model so it's not limited to slim PS3s.
Mine won't turn on the PS3 and won't stay connected over Bluetooth, so I have to keep it wired up all the time and turn it on and off with the remote. Lucky that I have a USB cable that just about reaches to my seat from the PS3 otherwise this could be extremely annoying.
