As strange as it may seem, but i wouldn't have put any game of this gen (so far) in the top 10.

There has been good games, but nothing that has knocked me on my arse.

Eh... Most of the games in your list are from the 90's. They gotta be from the last 10 years. (2000-2009)

How come Half Life 2 and Portal both made the top 10? ARen't they the same series?

It's funny how everybody always references the chainsaw man when talking about RE4 - I played the whole of chapter 1 and never encountered him at all. I think my mistake was taking turn abouts with a friend who rushed through a couple of screens... but if that encounter was indeed so significant it shouldn't have been so easily missed.

So...there's Civilization III but no Galactic Civilizations II or Sins of a Solar Empire? Looks like PC strategic (turn or RTS) games weren't even considered.
Also, I'm not a huge fan of sport games but none of the big series (PES, Fifa, NHL, Madden, whatever) didn't made the cut...there are a couple of shooter along the road and with Ikaruga so low in the list I didn't thought that Gradius V could make in the top ten, but again Ikaruga is mostly an original work with a terrific art direction and combo system, Gradius V is more of a compilation of previous Gradius games (an extremely good one though).
              [edit]
              And just one fighting game?

I thought you had to kill everyone in that section for access to the next?

Chainsaw guy was awesome so early on and a challenge. Worth dying once just to see the gore. Shocking!

Apparently you don't. Assuming that he appears in the actual first section, I got all the way through the village to the next 'episode' (chapter/level whatever it's called) without so much as glimpsing a chainsaw. Never played it after that so maybe I misunderstood when it appears.

Yeah. They're about as much the same series as Team Fortress 2 and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Well I wouldn't know, never played them - I just know they are sold as part of the same package... you can't get much more 'same series' than that, can you?

Not really. It's like saying Last Resort and Art of Fighting are part of the same series because they appear together on the same disc on SNK Arcade Classics. Portal is a totally separate game to HL2, which just happens to appear on the same disc.

They're not the same series, no. I'm a little surprised they didn't just go for "The Orange Box" to save a space, but to be fair maybe the games are so good you ought to celebrate Portal and Half-Life 2 separately.

I thought the list was pretty enjoyable. A decade is a long time but it also means that a lot of the staples of these lists are ineligible (most of the Super Mario games, most of the Zelda games, GoldenEye, FFVII, Half-Life etc). I think it's nice to take stock at the end of ten years; in this time of overwhelming anticipation and excessive excitement about most new releases, it's worth looking back and seeing which games have endured.

I think the list lost its way slightly in the top ten, but it was still a worthwhile exercise. It's made me want to replay Beyond Good & Evil too, to see how that holds up today.

Oh, so Vampire the Masquerade characters and backstory are directly referenced in Team Fortress 2? Awesome. Is there anything that game doesn't do?

The chainsaw man can appear twice in the initial village area but both encounters can be avoided, he appears once if you go in the house with the shotgun (indicated by a cutscene) or can appear if you try to run to the exit of the area - he is stood blocking the gate.

If neither of these triggers are hit he doesn't appear in this area
