Originally posted by dotoko View PostNintendo hit it lucky with the Wii and I don't think they'll be as lucky if they try compete with Sony/Microsoft again.
First the N64 which had some of the best games of all time but failed due to Nintendo making bad hardware choices (cartridges) and having limited 3rd party support compared to the PS.
And again with the Gamecube which featured a stellar lineup of games but once again was cruely ignored by the masses due to Nintendo making bad hardware choices again (not as good 3rd party support as Sony, no DVD drive or ability to play audio CDS aswel as the least powerful of the generations consoles despite being released after the PS2 and around the same time as the XBOX)
So mabee its fair that this time Nintendo has had the success as they got it bang on when it came to what the masses wanted.

Doesn't the Wii hardware itself generate profit for Nintendo and has done from day one while PS3 and 360 have been sold at a loss? So even if Joe Casual buys one game per year, Nintendo have still seen profit, right?
I can't conceive how Nintendo can be seen to have done anything but win massively this generation, whichever angle you look at it.

While mothers go and buy these games for their 8 year old daughters, One look at these shelves drives a hardcore gamer away. Nintendo is losing what they should be striving to keep: Their fans. Their loyal supporters who don't want to sit at home playing wii fit all the time.
Certainly Nintendo has won in terms of profiteering. But it hasn't been without a price.

The lack of DVD Video playback support surely wasn't a factor in the GameCube's demise, I don't think anyone really felt it was required. The GameCube was just unable to stand out enough to entice people away from the already-established PS2, and the XBox was already carving it's own niche in the meantime. Nintendo's own IP was not strong enough to compete with the Playstation brand at that time. It seems hard to believe now, but the Playstation brand was becoming synonymous with games consoles at the time.
Nintendo's lack of ability to distinguish themselves in the marketplace was surely a catalyst for the direction they chose to take with the Gamecube.
And as has been said, can Nintendo's decision to use cartidges on the N64 be labelled as 'unlucky'? CD was not new technology, Nintendo themselves had been working on CD-based hardware behind-the-scenes for many years before, and SquareSoft protested the decision to use cartridges very early on (resulting in Final Fantasy VII moving to the Playstation). That was Nintendo's own conscious decision which they paid dearly for, and they don't deserve to be given an easy time for this - it was regarded as an insane decision at the time. After all, it was Final Fantasy VII that finally 'won' the market in Asia for Sony (the Saturn was maintaining a lead before this).

We are greeted instead with My Pony 18 and Petz! Even Nintendo presented us with Style Boutique! They are presenting shovel ware!

The only aspect i don't like of the Wii is Nintendo's attitude towards online. It's the reason i don't download games via VC, as the games are tied to the original Wii console you purchased, and cannot be transferred to another Wii console in any way. So if your system breaks you've lost all your games. It's bull****.
And friend codes need to be replace with a more elegant component.
Hopefully Nintendo's more than tripled R&D budget over the last couple of years is used to improve their online presence (not that they had one in the first place!).

Okay mabee unlucky was the wrong word to use. They got it wrong on a hardware level and they paid the price particularly with the N64 as if that had been using CD'S they would of had FF7,8 & 9 aswel as alot more im sure.
And with the Gamecube i believe not having a DVD drive or having games on DVD'S did affect its sales somewhat. Im not saying it was the sole factor as there were alot of reasons but it did affect the Cubes sales.
At the end of the day iv never been a big fan of the piss....uh sorry the Wii but i dont have anything against Nintendo and perhaps there success this generation is a good thing as going into the next gen they will be stronger financially and will be able to offer a machine closer in terms of raw power to Sony & Microsofts consoles as well as being able to bring innovative features to the machine that only Nintendo seems to come up with.

Nintendo's decision to use cartridges had a knock-on effect on the kind of games that could be produced for the format. The same wasn't really true of the GameCube, 1.5GB was plenty at the time, it didn't hold development back.
