It's a Universal disc. You always get **** and half-assed menus.

I've probably said yes at some point in the past, so now it doesn't bother asking.

What Sony could easily do is implement a database that is stored on their end that compares the signatures to the title-id of the product, as well as a hash of the contents of the executable and the size of the executable.

They could easily spot edited apps at that point.

To get the most out of this you'd have to install a modified version of the OFW to allow things like installing pkg files as well so I think Sony may be able to tell when you log into PSN that your firmwares not legit either.

Of course they could just make a signed homebrew app that runs from bluray that installs apps from USB..

Aye your right, hadn't thought of that, any way Sony could tell what you have installed on your HDD then.

My understanding from the video was that they cannot yet run software from a Blu-Ray disc because disc-based applications run via an Apploader (presumably a layer which means games aren't running at low-level). Since this has little implications for running hombrew (low-level access is what they're working on), they've not bothered to work on getting the keys to access the Apploader. They state that it's probably very possible, they just have no plans to work on it. Watch from 43:15 on the video when the lady asks the question.

I'd imagine there is a fair bit involved in running disc based titles (both the app loader and the need to emulate the BD-ROM). Recordable BDs are too expensive and time consuming for anyone really to bother with them.

PSN titles will be a different story though.

Like recordable CD's were years ago?

You can turn off BD-Live features without taking the PS3 completely offline. I do it on my Blu-ray player because I've yet to see a reason to have it on - more trailers in crap quality and much slower disc loading are all I've had from it.

It's not going to stop people using their PS3s offline. And if we're talking about using that technique to prevent cheating online, that's all down to how much of the game is happening client side.

If the PS3 turns into the original Xbox when it comes to homebrew, I'm going to do what I did with that and buy another one. I'll keep a new slim model for playing games properly and going online, and my big old BC one will be for dicking around with homebrew.

No it's not. If you have a different executable to the official one then you won't be allowed online and your PS3 will be banned.

The point you make about offline homebrew is of course valid - but the reasoning for protecting online is that a) if they don't then the trophies and leaderboards won't mean anything, people will stop playing b) online gaming accounts for such a large portion of the gaming userbase now.

Offline games are completely screwed though, yeah.

Recordable CDs and DVDs had lots of very practical uses at the time though. BDs only really have a single use where you're not better off using flash memory.

Recordable BDs could take a while to become cheap.

The only thing the Xbox can't do, which I would want, is Saturn emulation. Could the PS3 handle that, what with it's 18.53 different processors? I mean, the Saturn only had two.

Otherwise I'm quite content with my Xbox - I had two modded ones!

The xbox has gone as far as running 720p movies (just about) and PSX emulation. I think anything else is a step too far.

With the Ps3 as open as it is now I would hope to see a new front end like XBMC etc plus ability to run blu ray isos etc. Theres already a DC emu out although I heard its flakey. Snes, finalburn and MD are perfect as expected. Wouldnt have thought Mame, pc/dos, saturn and Amiga emulation to be too far behind now.

I should've put a larger hdd in it than 320gb, grrrrr!

The only saturn emulator that was worth bothering with last time I tried was SSF and that was closed source so what's the other options, Yabause? I remember that being pretty poor for compatibility last time I tried around 1yr back.
