Any word on whether or not this can execute unsigned code? (i.e. homebrew).

However Linux on the PS3 never attracted much attention (admittedly it disabled hardware acceleration), not convinced it'll suddenly ramp up with this.

It does look like this is just a PS3 repeat of what happened when they completely cracked the PSP.
Sony used a special battery to boot a PSP into service mode where it would load firmware from the Memory Stick instead of the internal flash. Hackers somehow got hold of this and reverse-engineered it to load software to install custom firmware and run unsigned code.
And now...
Sony uses a special flash drive to boot PS3s into debug mode where it will load unsigned code. Hackers somehow got hold of this a reverse-engineered it to load unsigned code.
I think we know where Sony's security weaknesses are. And it's not in the software
If this is like the PSP situation, it could be a cat out of the bag thing until Sony creates a new PS3 model. In that case it worked on the hardware level before the firmware was even loaded and so couldn't be fixed in firmware updates, so if this works in the same way there's nothing that can be done with existing hardware.

Oh boo hoo hoo it's gonna enable piracy! That's what these things do. C'mon, chaps, we're on a gaming forum. Mods happen. Stuff like this should not be surprising us.
The only downside I can see is, as people have already stated on here, firmware updates with a bit more regularity and hardware revisions, which'll make gaming on the damn thing even more annoying for me than it is already.
They should do a Microsoft and use online play as a way of kerbing naughtiness. The only reason I haven't modded my 360 is because you could only play 1:1 copies of games, no homebrew, and now that JTagging or whatever is out I'm just not interested. Plus I need XBL for Street Fighter, so anything that could jeopardise that is a no-no.
A homebrew-enabled PS3, on the other hand, would be a tantalising prospect (and I'd give up PSN privileges in a flash for it) as it's quieter and more multimedia-friendly.
Will be interested in seeing how this unfolds. The U.S. Army will probably be happy, maybe they'll get their cluster working again
Ok ok, serious question, guys:
Is anyone else looking forward to their PS3 rebooting with an image of Elijah Muhammad like the iPhones did with Blackrain?
It is interesting to note that despite the many claims, right now there has been no "hello world" homebrew code executed that typically demonstrates that the hacker actually has full control over the system.
p.s. anyone else think Hotz looks like Dr. Yueh from Dune?

Review & with pics. However the site is in spanish but from the pics it's pretty obvious it works LOL
Cant say im super excited yet, just a pandora battery. I'll be more excited when they find a better use than just copying your games to the hard drive as i don't even use that feature on my 360.

Google Translate ftw
Choicy cuts include:
"GOW3 The backup has taken approximately 90 minutes to copy the internal HD of the console."
"...it is impossible to skip the videos of the games if loading from the PS jailbreak."
And my favourite feature:
"PS If you remove the Jailbreak to the console is turned on or is suspended or goes out, and I think that is very good for either the console or the PS Jailbreak."

Curious to whats on that usb stick?, i wonder if it is a chip or just files. If it's files i can see that sucker getting cracked & people just been able to use their own stick & copy the files on.
Suprised it took so long to crack, but in the end very few consoles survive a hacker assault hehe. I remember the gamecube held out for a suprisingly long time too.
