Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

Explore the world of Tomb Raider - featuring Lara Croft's latest adventures, games, news and more.

Another attempt at a reboot if rumours are to go by. It's brave not using the Tomb Raider name. Please for the love of god Crystal Dynamics, don't make this another cover based shooter.

Seems to be a download which is interesting.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – March 4, 2010 – Crystal Dynamics™, a part of Square Enix Europe, today announced Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light™, a new game developed by Crystal Dynamics, which will be released via digital download in 2010.

“This is a really exciting project for Crystal Dynamics, we have created something completely new and very different to what people might be expecting,” said Darrell Gallagher, General Manager of Crystal Dynamics. “Lara Croft is such an iconic character in videogames, with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light we have created what we believe is a truly original digital experience.”

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be shown strictly “behind closed doors” at this year’s Game Developers Conference beginning on March 9th.

Crystal Dynamics is an award-winning studio located in San Francisco. Founded in 1992, the studio has created and developed key game franchises such as: Legacy of Kain™, Pandemonium™, Gex™ and most recently the Tomb Raider™ series.

How many reboots is this now? The third?

If so, I hear that time is always a charm.

They're clearly trying to compete with Sonic for the title of 'most failed reboots'

Damn you smurf, I was mentally preparing a Sonic swipe and you beat me.

Probably just me but as soon as I clicked the link and saw the logo, Point n Click just entered my mind.

I had no idea Eidos was now owned by Square Enix (who have now dropped their sound team, worthy of a headline? Probably not). Yeah, I can see the whole point and click thing.

What the logo doesn't suggest, however, is Abigsmurf's fear of a cover-based shooter. I don't get that at all from the logo and I hope I'm right that it's not the case. It looks old. Classic. Pre-Indiana Jones.

I recently replayed Tomb Raiders 1 through 4 and they really have so much to offer. The early ones in particular featured some fantastic design, even with a few flaws along the way. I'll watch this with interest. She's not quite Sonic yet.

To me the logo suggests an inner struggle for Lara Croft, perhaps some repressed feelings regarding her sexuality that are starting to manifest themselves through a sense of self loathing! It brings to mind Descartes who said "Illusory joy is often worth more than genuine sorrow"!

I got the whole cover shooting thing from the fact all third person action shooters have a bloody cover system at the moment.

How many times has there been a tomb raider 'reboot' exactly. Does anyone actually play these games?

Maybe laura croft & the escape from the nursing home. Or laura croft & the tena lady of freshness.

I'm with you on this one. I reckon some sort of Professor-Leyton-a-like for the Nontendo consoles.

I'm not sure that's brave, I'd argue it's the opposite to be honest. It's been living off of the Lara Croft name for ages now (Hence the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider billing on the films).

Still have Underworld to play, but I thought the more recent games (Legend/Anniversary) were a step in the right direction. All they need now is Nolan North to play the lead and they'll be set.

The problem with the last load of Tomb Raider games is that they've insisted on clinging onto an overarching storyline which is nothing but rubbish and restricts them. They need to just ditch it, don't worry about resolving a storyline that no one really cares about, and properly reboot things.

Although something still tells me this new one will have even more boo-hoo'ing over unresolved matriarchal issues and crappy designed vampy demons with wings

From the title I was really hoping this would be:

Lara Croft and the Guardian Newspaper.

I've enjoyed the last 3 games. I thought Legend was a huge step in the right direction after the series had lost all interest for me. TR: Anniversary was great, and although not a carbon copy of the original (and best), it was close enough and brought back all that old magic for me. Underworld was a bit of a step backwards though, it was fun enough but it tried to be something it wasn't with too much combat, and the story just sucked.

I just hope they stick to what made the games appeal in the first place, and I'm not just talking about Lara's massive tits and tight arse. Give us plenty of old tombs to explore, some slick platforming action and puzzles to solve, and leave out all the clumsy combat and ridiculous stories.
