I'll get the 3DS because of the price, PSP2 is probably going to end up costing something like £500 anyway and I have a PS3 already... Also 3DS has Mario Kart, that's one big reason for me.

My guess is that 3DS is going to outsell PSP2 to something like 3:1.

Here here Silvergun x! Honestly, the amount of negative stuff being said right now is insane.

Show the hardcore some twin sticks and power to burn and look at them come running!

What amuses me most tho is the games. What a pathetic line up Nintendo have.. Badly thought out... Rehashes... Just the same old stuff... 'Right, that's it I'm cancelling my pre-order!!'

Ooohh look at the psp2. Wow look at the great line up of games it has! Wipeout! COD!! Uncharted!!! Killzone!!! Resistance!!!!

Urgh, you can see where I'm going with this...

So when is OOT scheduled for release... this year sometime? That and Pilotwings are about the only things that interest me at the moment.

Don't make me bring out the legendary 3 PSPs vs 1 lonely DS picture, still makes me smile to this day.
Can't understand all the NGP vs 3DS-ness, in all seriousness Sony haven't even show a single game yet on the NGP AND it probably won't launch til Christmas. Giving Nintendo almost a year to push glasses free 3D to the world, NGP may possibly be too much a little too late, we shall see. Exciting times ahead though for the handheld market generally, just got to see if an iPhone 5 throws the cats amongst the pigeons.
There is no doubt in my mind I will eventually end up with a NGP Slim and a 3DS Lite

For me now getting one at launch is coming down to Pilotwings and the eShop. I'm hearing conflicting things about both - Amazon and Play both seem to think Pilotwings is definitely coming on the 25th while no one else (including Game, where I preordered early and foolishly) does. With the eShop it was meant to be day one but now it's back to May, but hold on is that just for Japan or all regions? It's very confusing

If neither of those are available I won't get one, because there just isn't a game I want to buy other than Pilotwings and Link's Awakening at launch.

Oh, and if anyone has an invite to one of the 'test 3DS' events, I'd be much obliged . If it's done by region, London only plz

It's not. The negativity has been quite independent of the NGP. You only have to go back a few days in this thread to see that.

If you actually want to understand the reactions, you only have to look at the talk of 3DS control concerns prior to the announcement of the NGP's dual sticks. 3DS control concerns did not suddenly appear after the NGP.

But seems to me, if you'll get both as you say you will, that you'll be a winner regardless. They seem to be hitting different ends of the market, which can only be a good thing.

It was getting negative feedback ever since the launch lineup was announced. Of course that isn't the end of the world for some of us, however the suspicion that the 3D effect is like Clash of the Titans or Alice in Wonderland is. I suppose we've just got to stick to the 1st and 2nd party stuff, which has always been the case anyway.

Those I actually class as casual games.

Well that comes down to the definition of 'hardcore' one which I'd argue sways from person to person. Far be it from me to suggest who's correct but for me, in these times, a hardcore player is simply a gamer now.

Anyway I suggest all the people who are now saying what a hash Nintendo has made of things to do what I've just done. Take a casual stroll back to the heady days of March 23rd 2010 and the first page of this thread. There's some pretty choice stuff people have said. Read a little bit, skip forward some and read a little more. Then skip forward, say to the actual hardware reveal and the games being developed. Read what people thought about that line up...

Suffice to say personally, I don't think much has changed.

Yes the battery life isn't what I'd like. Tho it has to be said that with wifi, auto backlight and 3d off or turned down I think people will get substantially more more out of it.
Yes the price was high initally. But a sub £200 (which is what I believe it'll eventually release at) 3d portable actually isn't that bad considering.

i wouldnt say nintendo have made a hash of it exactly, but the main complaints about the 3DS were all apparent before the NGP reveal.

its pretty expensive, particularly in europe.
the launch line up is lacklustre.
                      terrible battery life.
                      and its region locked.

after seeing what wonderful inovations nintendo made with the original ds and wii. its a little disappointing to see them go down the better graphics route. while i'm sure 3D will be cool, its really just a visual upgrade, and i cant imagine there will be a single game on it that wouldnt work in 2D.
sure they also added an analogue stick, but the original psp was (still is) slated for only having one, when two has been the standard for 10 years.
sony have gone and chucked in loads of new things, which is exactly what people have been saying needed to be done by sony/microsoft since the success of wii/ds.

but its still going to be a success, and they will sell millions of the things anyway... at least one of them will be to me.

Well I think that, for me at least, I've given reasonable answers to 3 of those.

Regarding the Region lock, again completely agree. But again, who didn't see this coming? Especially given the download service and regional content? And I guarantee the psp2 will have it too.

Eh? This is basically what everyone was asking for prior to the announcement of the machine!? Basically a more powerful ds. Nintendo have supplied that, along with the innovation of 3d, added in the motion stuff, nice big screen, same form factor etc etc.

And if you can't imagine a game that can actually make good gameplay use of a 3d screen you seriously need some imagination! From what I've heard the new pes viewpoint certainly points to it's uses.

Anyway, regarding the 3d effect itself, I think this answers peoples questions fairly well.

not sure how you can guarantee that .... as the ps3 isnt locked, and offers the same. we'll all have to keep our fingers crossed.

i was hoping nintendo would come up with something really radical again and change the way we play like they did with the wii and ds. i have no idea what, but i certainly wasnt just hoping for more power.

and of course i can imagine lots of games that will look cool in 3D. but i'll be very surprised if anything genuinely new comes from it. some game that just couldnt be done on a normal 2D screen. there certainly isnt anything i've seen from all the currently announced games. maybe i've missed something?

We know how parallax barrier tech and stereoscopic 3D works.

This is a difference in rendering techniques rather than screen tech.

'Real' 3D = all objects are rendered from 2 different camera angles.

Using planes for 3D effect = Every 3D object is rendered from a single angle. This same rendering is displayed for both eyes the only difference is that it's positioned slightly different for each eye. It produces a limited 3D effect where everything looks like cardboard cutouts.

Plane 3D uses almost half the processing of (unoptimised) real 3D

                            Comment

Ahh. Well you've kind of answered you own question then surely? If we can get away with using planes then that is what will be used. Especially in the first flush of games where devs are just getting used to the machine and haven't had time to optimise.

Indeed, that's why it's so worrying if some games are using it from the get go. It will be incredibly tempting to just use faux 3D so they can make a game that looks good in the screenshots.

Devs have already shown that screenshots > what its like to play the game with the whole 30fps/60fps thing.
