The NGP has taken the sheen off the 3DS for me a bit. I am still getting the thing but Nintendo need to stick to their promises about the launch games. The news of Zelda delay is bitter.

Yeah the NGP announcement is really going to hit Nintendo hard.

I think the 3DS has been a bit rushed really, the launch line up suggests that this really should be launching a month or two later. Did Nintendo panic over the NGP rumours and push it forward a month or where there some other issues delaying the dev kits going out?

Serious question: has there ever been a console launch without a killer ap? That one game you'd expect 80% of people to buy?

The problem wasn't really the NGP I think. The problem was the disappointing show by Nintendo - region locking, pricing, most of all the launch games. There has a been a serious amount of negativity about the 3DS since that show a week or so ago.

And then the NGP came. If people had been wowed by the 3DS, that wouldn't have mattered. But the reality is that people wanted something different and became much more receptive to, well, anything else. And that anything is the NGP. The PSP had a massive battle of perception on its hands. With gamers (and I do think it really will be just with gamers - I suspect the masses will still eat the 3DS up happily), the 3DS may well face similar perception problems.

The main problem the 3DS will have now is control. Kid Icarus has of course been a talking point, some saying the control is terrible and others saying you get used to it quickly. But you'll just have to look at the twin sticks of the NGP and see a handheld with control that works. Control you don't have to wrestle with or get used to.

It's a shame it's too late for Nintendo to add a second stick. Personally, I think it needs it.

Didn't the Xbox launch with Halo? The N64 with Super Mario 64? Or do you just mean handhelds?

Launch line ups I'd say lacked a killer app or were ropey for some reason or other are (though the systems hype and overall appeal sometimes overcame the lack of a strong title):

                  Nintendo Wii
                  Nintendo DS
                  Nintendo Gamecube
                  Playstation 3
                  Playstation Portable
                  Playstation 2
                  Xbox 360

and they're just recent gen launches. Early adopters are mostly attracted by the allure of the hardware and the promise of what will come along later on.

The thing that might work in Nintendo's favour though is they're going to have around a 6 month lead on the PSP2 and Sony will have to announce a solid launch plan with a good RRP and solid Day 1 line up with no drawbacks. There's still the potential risk that the bubble could burst a bit like with what happened with the 3DS recently as we're still missing a lot of key facts... though the PSP2 does have Uncharted

Yeah, Kid Icarus doesn't look like it controls comfortably, you're forced to do so much on one side of the console with a single hand that I could see your fingers aching after 20 minutes or so.

And of course I've been fairly vocal at the heavy handicap the console gives lefties with this control scheme.

The biggest problem Nintendo had is that those January announcements have been 90% bad news. The poor launch line up may have been forced upon them but the region locking certainly wasn't. The battery life completely goes against a policy that has seen Nintendo have the market leading portable for what, 4, 5 generations now?

The Virtual Boy's nowhere near old enough! I bet Sho's even got one lying around somewhere...

Nintendo are now saying the E-shop won't be open until May.

My 3DS could be gathering dust just a week after launch...

I wish I could find the old DS thread.. Imo history is just repeating itself, right down to people saying the same old things.

After having a think and reading a few non gaming reports and comments on the psp2, I'm rather more inclined to my original view on the ds. It's (3ds) going to walk all over the psp2, sales AND game wise.

Having just played one, seeing really is believing. I am certainly concerned about things like battery life and the potential of headaches from prolonged use (although most of my portable gaming is done at home so it's a moot point really).

I'm not expecting the 3DS to deliver a new gaming experience, I'm hoping it's going to give me an immersive expereince unmatched by other platforms. Based on the games I've played, it's going to do just that.

Well since the NGP announcement Amazon have dropped their price to £202 and Gamestation to £219. This saves me some more cash on my pre order. Competition really does help the consumer.

I am looking forward to seeing the 3D effect in person. I have a parallax barrier 3d camcorder but the 3d effect on that screen is very poor
