Trusty Bell ... that always cracks me up.

It's the name FAmmEdUDd gives to his weiner before a trip down the docks.

Yes, I know! I started the thread...

Thing is, I was ten years as a game reviewer and my proclivities are 2D shmups, platformers and beat'emups. RPGs never did it for me, but I ended up reviewing Eternal Arcadia for EDGE and that kinda opened the door. As I said, I also played FFX for a walkthrough. When you play games for a living, you tend not to want to spend all your downtime wading through RPGs. Especially when they're on a console you hate.

But times change. I no longer write, so can enjoy games for what they are. Maybe now's the time for VII. I just wished XIII had been as good - or at least close.

Why are you even in this thread then? you should be playing it already. Its better than any current gen RPG by far.

Whoops - slipped back to 'Native Name Mode'.

'Excuse me, have you got Kaitaidaisensou, please?'
            'Do what? Get out!'

Sorry, I was alluding to the votes for Lost Odyssey.

Dunno what happened to XI and XII - did they go all PSO?

XI was online and XII used an Online type battle system that I didnt personally enjoy much. I really didnt like the story, or the look of it, or the characthers, or much of anything about it really though.

What does it clock in at hours-wise? I don't sprint through, usually.

I predict another FF vs. thread

Check out the first play thread too, as all the games you mentioned can be found there.

Oh and FFV > the rest

Vastly different to anything else mentioned so far but have you considered Demon's Souls? Action RPG but has exploration, levelling up of characters, weapons and armour. Has massive bosses, a story of sorts, ingenious online features and IMO is the greatest videogame ever made. It's a PS3 title and you'd need to import from Japan/Hong Kong or USA. All versions feature English voice and text.

I'm not interested in X <> Y, more what RPGs are worthy of attention. Take your point, though!

Thanks for the heads up on the FP threads.

                          FFV SNES, yeah?

Yes, there's an excellent GBA port of it too which features a new dungeon, summons, jobs and a redone complete script (Farris now sounds like a pirate). The only issue is the sound, but that's hardware related.

This is all in my opinion and I am by no means an expert in JRPGs, but i've played a few:

FF XIII - Gets a lot of hate, but i like it so far, looks good, sounds good, has an interesting enough story, and combat is fun although different

Lost Odyessy - Not got very far with this but really like what i've seen, has a lack of whiny teenagers, which is a plus, as has been said plays like a FF game really, can be bought for under ?10 so a must I reckon

Blue Dragon - Didn't really get on with this, it just seemed a bit boring but may revisit it

Mass Effect - Looks good but is a bit different from a JRPG, again you can pick it up so cheap its rude not to even give it a try

FFVII - I wouldn't bother with this, yes its a classic but the graphics are painful these days and its always been overrated, if you want an old FF pick IV, V or VI as the 2d still has charm, IV and VI have better stories and V has the job system which rocks

You can't really go wrong with any of the 'main' FF games, in my opinion. They're all great in their own way.
