Cant really blame them tho i bet they have made a fortune from WoW, why wouldnt they want to make another MMO. Personally think the Starcraft setting could be good for an MMO.

i have some theories -

1. it is a MMORTS. that is a possibility but probably isn't as mass market as they want. it would also tie in with the starcraft 2 rumours that went round a few weeks ago with regard to the new race and units
2. it is a 3rd person action mmo. they canned ghost and took elements from it and made a real time mmo (obviously with fewer people on a server etc.) this would fit in t=with gun combat more
3. it is a WoW clone. dullsville.

it should also be noted that they have been hiring next gen programmers recently and since MS and Sony offered them money, drugs and women to bring WoW to console it could well be a console game as well as pc. this would mean that option 2 above makes sense as that is more of a console game.

being a Vivendi employee i should be in the beta whenever that rolls around (probably about 2012 knowing blizzard).

It's not like it matters. Whether the announcement is Starcraft 2 or a Starcraft MMO (which would wrap up the sci-fi MMO subgenre as well as fantasy), anyone who works at Blizzard will soon be able to make their clothes out of cash.

It's been rumoured for years, and this is another rumour. It wouldn't surprise me if it were true of course, even that strange Starcraft Vs Diablo mmo rumoured a few years ago.

Starcraft mmo would be incredibly popular, potentially as big as WoW, but the genre is in need of a complete redesign. The cynic in me says this is a huge cashin, but Blizzard are a clever forward thinking developer and I hope they would try something a bit different. If Starcraft MMO is another solo grind then it'd be a massive wasted opportunity.

a complete redesign? Nah - most of what WoW does it does perfectly, all they need to do is have a whole new setting and a different combat system and people will be happy. You'd be surprised how heavily the mmo genre relies on it's combat system, would feel pretty fresh if it had a more action based one rather than the "right click and then go make some dinner" WoW system.

NO! NO! NO! I am still waiting for the next installment to see what happens in the story of Starcraft which was quite interesting IMO. A lot of plot twists were introduced in Brood Wars only implying a sequel. They can't do this. Come on, it's almost been ten years since Starcraft was released.
