On this topic, has the Site compiled the 2009 feature yet? We're already bringing up 2010!
At the moment the only game that I can consider for 2010 game of the year is Mass Effect 2. It righted all major wrongs of the original and introduced some great new characters. Bioware also successfully changed the pace of the game whilst keeping the deep and rewarding RPG mechanics. Mass Effect 1 was a journey of discovery and the story was uncovered in a fairly slow and explorative manner.
Mass Effect 2 is a tonal shift in atmosphere that reminds me of the difference between the Films Alien & Aliens. The sense of urgency is prevalent throughout Mass Effect 2 and characters live and die with little time for reflection. No game has done this so well since Majoras Mask and along with all the other additions and refinements, it's my game of the year thus far.
As for other contenders, I haven't played enough of Red Dead Redemption or Alan Wake to pass judgment on them yet. Likewise I can't vouch for the quality of No More Heroes 2 or Super Mario Galaxy 2 as I still have yet to play them. Aside from that lot, a mention must go to the brilliant After Burner Climax but that's a port of a long since released game!
Off the top of my head, later in the year we have Halo Reach, Tomb Raider Guardian of Light, Fable III and a host of unannounced games that'll get revealed at E3 this month. Also we may see GT5, Last Guardian and Arkham 2 in 2010 so my vote for Mass Effect 2 is not guaranteed yet!
