What i'm wondering though, will this be on-rails of some sorts?

The only thing i can see being on rails is the fancy quick maneuvours, looks QTE like as a triangle button appeared on the hud. Theres no way namco are stupid enough to take away full control from the player.

Love the Ace Combat games so this is very welcome news. Now we just need an Ace Combat HD Trilogy release for the PS3 including 4/5/0

AC 360 was hard, as per this post: http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showpost.p...&postcount=103

I don't normally spend over a year trying to beat one level! Level 9 was nails. After that I gave up on the game. It was like the flying fortress was my "End game." Still, i'm glad I beat it. I think the joystick/projector combo is harder than a joypad too.

I liked the coop, but felt is was too much "Single player game, where you happen to share the gamespace."

A true coop would have been things like:

          - Formation flying challenges
          - Play as navigator/gunner in a two seater
          - some way of needing teamwork on targets, like needing to drop a massive bomb within 2 seconds of each other on a set target.

I look forward to the new release.

The video looks amazing, but I guess it's most CGI?

In terms of ace combat moving forwards, for me the game has always been about the "Experience" rather than the need for a challenge. My fave in the series is AC4.

I hope they reduce the difficulty so that at the very least it has an easy mode for folks who want to go down the projector, joystick, 7.1 road.

Haha, I can vividly remember the boss at the end of stage 9. Beating it on normal wasn't too bad but beating it on Ace difficulty with an S ranking trying to achieve the platinum star medal was one of the most frustrating things I've experienced in a game. I hate to think how many hours I spent on that level and while finally achieving it was immensely satisfying I have to say that, in hindsight, I don't think it was worth all the agony.

A trilogy featuring 6 games. How exciting!

Ace Combat 04 is the only one that is really good out of the entire series, so they should make 7 like that.
              Kept you waiting, huh?

I didn't find AC4 to be the best AC. It felt like there was a lot of ground combat, too much perhaps. I enjoyed 2 and 5 more. Japanese AC3 is also very good in my book, despite the wonky handling. You could defect to different corporations. I still have to finish some missions in that game.

I thought Ace Combat 05 was the best. It also had the best story out of them all imo.

I loved AC4 at the time but going back to it after a lot of experience with 5 and Zero changed my opinion somewhat. What I did love about it was the presentation and the artwork. It was a lot more creative than the AC5 style CG and the cringeworthy live actors in Zero. AC6 looked a lot more generic in terms of the cutscenes from what I saw.. I wonder what they will do with this one?

God I hated AC5 but only because the dire wingmen characters and their excruitating radio banter.

AC4 and particularly its beautifully simple, melancholic back story presentation, was the stand out one for me.

I only played AC6 on the XB360 very recently and it did feel tired. A typical case of a current generation game where more doesn't mean better. It didn't even look that much more impressive than the PS2 games either.

As for AC6 being hard - I beg to differ. Even on it's hardest setting it wasn't as tough going as Ace on some previous games. With a few hiccups I was S ranking most missions on the hardest difficulty OK. Only thing I balked at were a couple of the Achievements - completing the game with just the gun in particular. You have to be real hardcore to even want to do that. I'd had more than enough by then and just couldn't face another playthrough.

This new annoucement is very interesting but when they start talking about new directions and bull like getting you closer to action I begin to worry. But if all this means is they're going to include attack helicopters I'm encouraged, it's something I've been hoping for years.

I agree 100% with you. AC04 was the stand out game for me. Infact it is one of my favourite PS2 games full stop. It's even better if you have a PS2 BB Unit, which reduces load times to zero. I hated part 5 due to the wingmen. I've not played Zero, but I believe it uses the same system.

I've been awaiting a PS3 Ace Combat game announcement forever. I shall be playing this on day one.

That is the reason I love it. It was simple and fun, very cheesy Hollywood movie like.

Each to their own I guess but when I'm just about to dive bomb an enemy stronghold I don't want hear about the family history of one of my wingmen. Worse, being expected to answer yes/no to some fatuous questions from them mid-attack either.

When what's his name (Chopper?) was shot down I celebrated. Before that it was like being forced to listen to some hyper-active American kid on a sugar rush. I just don't understand how people couldn't have been thoroughly annoyed by it.

The wingmen in AC0 and AC6 were borderline annoying too but noticeably tuned down from AC5 where they took the cheese and spread it far too thick for many player's taste.

AC5's chatter was too much. It was downright horrible with Japanese audio, meant I had to read all that bs during gameplay. I quickly changed it back to English.

But outside of that, 5 had some amazing missions. Especially the one in the canyon against the Belkan Aces was thrilling on the highest diff.

AC0 wasn't anything near Choppers banter.

I don't even remember there being wingmen during the gameplay in AC0. The only wingman I can recall is the one that defected and became the final boss.
