    Interview With Dave Perry

I was lucky enough to get an interview with Dave Perry of GamesMaster fame. I hope the mods don't mind me linking to it here as im sure it's of interest especially with the other GamesMaster feature on the site - http://www.casuallyhardcore.net/2010...w-gamesmaster/

Here's a small snippet below, although you'll find out about what really happened with the Mario 64 incident, if he did go out with Denise Van Outen and the future of GamesMaster as a TV show. Im sure everyone will agree he comes across as a really nice guy and is very honest. Can't thank him enough for answering the questions.

CH: What did you think of Mario 64 once you got a chance to play the full version?

Dave Perry: I?ve never played it. I have always hated those cutesy Nintendo games.

CH: Tell us some behind the scenes secrets at Games Master. We hear some challengers were given multiple goes at winning if it made for better TV.

Dave Perry: That?s true, everything was not always what it seemed. But you have to understand that first and foremost it was a television show and that became my biggest frustration in the end. I wanted gaming to be the priority, even if things went awry from time to time, but I felt that come the end of Season 6 it was no longer something I wanted to be involved with, and I wasn?t very good at just ?going with the flow?.

CH: Not many people will know that you were on QVC for a bit, bit of a step down from being on Games Master right? What made you do it?
Oh and one last thing, 'he' had a bet on here and won ?50, did he ever get paid for it? You'll see the answer in the link.

Interesting interview and nice to read but regarding THAT incident, I've always favoured Dominik Diamond's argument. Super Mario 64 was the biggest game release that year (probably that decade) and for a gamer who professed to be as "hardcore" as he claimed to state that he wouldn't play it as it didn't have a PAL release never rang true.

That interview basically reinforced my believe that he was a probably a very good gamer within his comfort zone but when faced with the games that had a real following, would probably be pretty average. I mean, Mortal Kombat? Really? Even back in the day I don't remember there being a massively competitive scene for the MK games and was more of an "exhibition" game (like Killer Instinct) that you'd drop a few credits in to see the latest fatalities etc. but never played to any serious degree.

I think it's fair enough to have simply not played a game, especially if it's not his thing... but I gather he didn't really take it very well, and that's why people still talk about it to this day.

I remember the infamous moment too - as I recall (though I could be wrong) wasn't it also in part that it clearly looked like he tried to get the shortcut on that level, messed it up and thus got a bit stroppy?!

When I used to see him on TV I thought he was a complete tool and after reading that interview my opinion hasn't changed. Maybe he's one of those guys you need to meet in person.

If he was chocolate he'd eat himself , and him GM no thanks , DD is the only guy with the personality to have done it justice.

I've never really understood the strong connection between him and Gamesmaster. Was he deeply involved in the shows creation or running? On one hand he says how great it was to be part of the team that made it a hit and on the other admits he was ignored by the production team. I always remember him, like the other commentators, as being entirely redundant to the show.

Being involved in the TV/Gaming industry is sure to have provided him with plenty stories to tell but I always got the impression he was over-inflating the tales and drawing a strong link to GM as a way to trade off someone elses success as it's the only real thing of note he was involved in.

I think I met him once when I was at Future and he was PR-ing for some games company. No-one wanted to go to lunch with him or out for drinks after work (the usual practice). I'm sure he's fine but the arrogant 'I'm a super gamer' act does nothing for him in my eyes and his (short lived) mags were rubbish I'm afraid.

                            That's exactly how I feel.

I never understood why this show was so popular apart from Dominic Diamond being pretty funny. I do remember this guy, but all I remember was him commenting on the challenges. People only remember him because of the bandanas and the incident with Mario 64, I just think most people thought he was a tit and remember him for all the wrong reasons. I have never met him though, so he might be a real nice guy outside his TV persona.
