Had a chance to doss on this. Still feel so negative about the whole thing! Why?
To supplement the rants so far:

    - The dev has produced utter bollocks. Not good bollocks like EDF, just pissflaps.
    - From the footage and screens it looks so very bland. The crisp, clear nature of EDF has been replaced with a dark grey and brown everywhere. Where are the red ants? The black ants? What the hell are those meant to be? Oh yeah. Brown ants. Good old brown. Well how realistic, how lovely for you, how technically proficient they look. And how small and boring.
    - It looks like everything that made the other games so good has been crushed. What the hell is that bloke doing with a jetpack? Why does the soldier look like a refugee from every generic space shooter ever, instead of a proper Japanese EDF guy? The ants are tiny, and in EDF bigger is better. They aren't big enough!

My fear is that a poor Western developer has got hold of the title and, due to being hopeless, foolishly attempted to add polish and shine to the series. Those bugs are too fat and overly engineered. I'm afraid that everything will be small and far too 'designed', with ****ty fancy effects and camera bollocks reducing the number of onscreen enemies. I'd wager there's a 'serious' story with attempted-fancy cutscenes. There'd better not be any bloody 'character development'! Only New Detroit is mentioned (shock! US made up city in Western dev game), I hope we still have Tokyo - the home of giant monsters!

I just can't believe it. Sandlot had honed their craft after 3 games, then dished out a great franchise to a rotten developer, who will probably try to prove their cred by flexing their technical muscles and ruining the whole thing. The risk is it'll lose every ounce of design and charm and become an average-at-best standard Western game. With 'competent' voice acting and 'passable' visuals. Well whoop-de-do, totally bland mediocrity. The fact that the soldier and insects look overly designed makes me sick with worry. I'm not opposed to better visuals. But I am opposed to bland, soulless visuals. It looks like an undergraduate's homage to Lost Planet.

If Vicious Cycle take out all the fury, fun and humour, then it's a travesty.

With further reading I have seen that D3 have owned Vicious since 2007. I'm trying to keep an open mind until I can actually play it.

If they are using existing code and polishing it so the engine and gaming style is similar to Sandlots then I think we have a chance. If it's a new build then I fear the worst.

And how many of their titles have you played?

I'd say I'm probably better qualified than anyone on this forum when it comes to D3's games.

Besides, D3 only publish the games, hence the name D3 PUBLISHER. Pretty much all their Japanese releases are developed by companies like Sandlot, Hunex, Taito, Atelier Double & Success and if people actually bothered to play any of them, they'd find that a lot are actually quite good.

However, this game is 90% likely going to be a 'by numbers generic western third person shooter', which is a shame as the first two games in the series were fantastic.

Perhaps, but we all loved EDF despite its low production values - it was perfect proof that budget made can still be hugely entertaining.

As everyone has said, I didn't care about framerate, lighting, rendering or anything else with EDF2 on PS2 (I had the JPN import), I wanted hundreds of bugs storming me while buildings explode into0 millions of pieces.

For a budget game, I was genuinely jaw-dropped seeing how I could lay pretty much every single structure to waste.

I fail to understand the need to outsource - surely it would be cheaper/easier to do it in-house, while retaining everything people love about it?

The problem with the Japanese is not that they lack the skill, or ability to make modern HD games, just don't have any self-confidence.

Oh, absolutely. I was commenting more on the general trend for Japanese publishers to shift their HD console development westwards.

EDF is a tricky one, the low production values are a large part of the appeal, and there aren't too many developers who could solve the games technical deficiencies (draw distance, framerate, online play) without being tempted to overhaul the art style at the same time.

I suppose the saving grace of the Western dev thing is that it looks online.

Though on the other hand, there are a thousand other ****ty, charmless Western games online.

              THIS HAS RUINED MY WEEKEND!!!!

Well I did like the look of the trailer. And the images we have seen are pretty early. If it can give me the fun of the other games but online with everyone it will be good i think.
Even if it becomes a little more generic, there is still nothing else like it.

But did you see how many spiders that walker dropped????? ONE! BLOODY ONE! And the spider looked really small! New Detroit. NEW DETROIT! ONE BLOODY CITY!!!! - that's what the press shizzle insinuates. I think I'm cracking up!

                  Sob.

                    Ugh.

                    Just....ugh.

I mean, that giant spindly spider did look quite cool, and going on what I've seen of Matt Hazard, the developers do seem the type to do EDF's mad and insane world a faint whiff of justice.

                    But still, ugh.

It just looks like they've taken EDF and attempted to take a serious stab at the concept. Which defeats the point entirely.

                        Exactly! Bloody greys and browns.

                        Tiny tiny spiders.

It's like vp just said to me on the headset. If you tried to mock up a screenshot of what you DIDN'T want a new EDF to look like, it would look like that. Tiny, bland, dull, generic toss.

Well, on the bright side, at least it didn't kidnap your wife, renaming her in the process. That would be worse, probably.

Otherwise, what if dozens of angry fans sent emails complaining? Reckon it might do anything? It's not like EDF is going to attract the mainstream anyway - it's niche fanbase is its lifeblood.

They'd do nothing - it's all arranged. But it may gave them sad eyes knowing how many diehards they've skanked. Or maybe not. But at least you'd be letting them know about your disappointment. D3 are most likely to blame.
