Not if I want to play them in english they aren't. Even games that are multilingual in other regions (like BB:CS) are restricted to Japanese only for the Japanese version.

I think the lesson here is to stop buying crap japanese games because they are japanese.

There are many Japanese PS3 games that support full English. It's pretty much only RPGs that are unplayable in my experience. I've 60-odd NTSC-J games that all support English. I don't see this as a problem personally.
          Kept you waiting, huh?

Stuff like Aquanauts Holiday is well worth a look.

Maybe there are, but not amongst the games I want to play. I'm not going to start playing stuff I'm not interested in just because it has english support...

This doesn't matter to me, as my machine just bloody died.

I'm also going to assume it's just some guys poking around the SDK rather than big news.

I can't see how region-free gaming has hurt the PS3, such that it would make them reconsider their decision, nor can I see how the jailbreak(assuming it's to blame) would encourage them to enforce region coding, as that would most likely encourage people to use the jailbreak, unless I'm missing something here.

If they did, people who seriously buy imports will just mod their machines(or buy more than one region of each console) to do so if possible, and people who don't buy imports aren't going to mod their machines just to buy imports for the hell of it.

By making a console region-free, they're basically helping prevent a situation where someone mods their machine just to play imports but then starts playing copies or homebrew or whatever as a side-effect. Putting that region lock back in would probably cause more harm than good, I think.

In the early days when they'd be selling the console at a loss, it wouldn't make financial sense for them to force people to buy multiple regions of the same console as they'd lose even more money.

Christ, can a mod go a day without putting their own 'twist' on someones topic here? This place is so regimented sometimes. Edge aren't reading anymore you know.

Well, being region free, nullified the main reason put forward for mod chips. Legally it's not questionable to mod a console to make it region free. However modding it when it's already region free means the sole purpose of the mod is for piracy. Sony removed the grey area.

Bit gutting they're going back, I don't tend to buy anything other than UK games, but it is nice to have the option. It also means when I sell games on ebay, they get more bids lol.

                        Speak for yourself!

I bought the PS3, rather than an Xbox 360, purely because it was region free.

Friends in the US send me games. I buy Japanese games online. I'd say 30% is Japanese/Asian, and 30% American.

Man, **** Sony if they region lock it. That's me dead in the water.

If Sony region lock the PS3, a system I've championed because it's region free, then that is the day I give up on gaming. And someone on here can have the piece of **** dead brick I'm then left with (for a nominal fee).

                        **** Sony.

Why would region locking come into play at this fairly late stage in the PS3's life?

As has been mentioned it's always been possible to region lock content on the PS3, for some reason it's been picked up as news when as far as we can tell it's not. I guess if any publisher decides to use it we might be in trouble, but at the moment there's no indication that that will be the case.
