Yeah, its just what they've found by haxoring and trawling through the leaked sdk I think.

I'm confused - if region locking on PS3 was optional to begin with, which is the same as it is with the 360, how come all PS3 games so far are region free but quite a few 360 games are region locked?

Do Sony prefer it if developers don't region lock their games? I may be wrong, but I could've sworn the Sony E3 conference way back when spoke of all first-party games definitely being region-free while not being specific about third-party games, but I may have got my lions crossed.

This is why I've been keeping my launch JPN PS3 in the back room, safely away from an internet connection-lol

Even if this were to happen, surely a Japanese PS3 is the worst model to be stuck with? There aren't really any Japanese exclusives worth shouting about this generation.

I have a Japanese model and if I was limited to only Japanese games I'd be very annoyed. Most of my 'big' purchases have been imported from the west.

Surely most if not all the games you have imported are available in Japan?

I'm in the same boat. This would piss me off no end. But I wouldn't buy a pal unit.

I could well be wrong about this but don't Microsoft mandate that region free games are rated globally which then increases the cost? I think with PS3 games they're just rated in the regions that they are released in which means that import PS3 games shouldn't be sold over here as they haven't been PEGI certified.

I do remember that Sony did say before launch that first party games would be region free and that they would encourage developers to do the same but it would be the choice of the individual publisher rather than Sony.

                            This isn't news is it?

Since launch it has always been like this but Sony said they would not be locking 1st party games (to combat piracy I think was the reason given).

edit: beaten to it by JP
