    PSP - is it dead?

Sorry if there is already a thread for this.

I'm thinking about getting a PSP Go now there's some good offers knocking around and with the 10 free download game pack. However looking at the future releases there doesn't seem to be much on the way. I know it doesn't sell as well as the DS but still 60 million units sold is very good, or have they all gone to Japan?

It's been a while since I've been a handheld gamer. I used to love the DS until it dried up with only games for your Grandad

Possibly controversial topic but I'd say yes, I bought the DS first but ended up with a much larger collection of games for the PSP but there's nothing much out there of interest these days that I've seen anyway.

      Never Forget!

Reckon PSP 2 could be a powerhouse but in comparrison the PSP was a powerhouse against DS and look at that outcome, history will repeat.

I have also been contemplating a Go, I would be interested to hear other peoples opinions on this as well. I use my Phat a lot, has served me well since its launch.

If the stock levels in the shops I've been to in the last week is anything to go by... yes, the PSP is dead compared to the DS.

Use it every day, see them being used every day on the train - not dead at all (but the rumours will never end it seems)

It's dead in Australia. Only specialist game shops stock them or games for them, and I've never seen a go on sale.

+ isn't the ps store or whatever on the go abysmal? ie crazy prices and lots of missing games?

                Was it ever alive?

Seriously though, the machine obviously doesn't even have a fraction of the success or ubiquity of the DS, but it has always been buoyant. However, I don't think the latest revisions have actually helped it much; a handheld that isn't backwards compatible with itself and cannot play most of its own games natively is beyond daft. And I've always hated the analogue nub on that thing.

IMO, the PSP has always seemed like a fashion accessory for yoof types who want to look cool in public but don't really care about games.

Given the sheer amount of stunning games on it, I'd say that's bollocks. And there were some stunning ones right from the start. I still remember the day my JP one arrived and I loaded up Ridge Racers for the first time. Blew me away. And such an enjoyable game.

Then Lumines. Why this isn't on PSN is beyond me. It's one of the definitive PSP games.

But the games, in spite of rumours to the contrary, kept coming. Most recently, the short but definitely sweet God Of War Ghost Of Sparta continues to impress after all these years. The system may be winding down but there is a massive catalogue of great games for it. The real issue with the Go is that not all are on PSN and some there are definitely more expensive than they should be at this stage.

Stop talking such utter crap ! . Its a quality handheld with a huge line of brilliant games . And it may be on its way out over here in terms of support and sales, in Japan its seems anything but

Precisely, I see more PSPs getting used on the Japanese subway than I do DSes. We get threads like this every 6 months or so, and we've been getting them for the past 5 years. Some people just don't want to accept the machine I guess.

PSP has been dead for quite a while, the few people i know that have one do have minor tech probs with buttons, switches, etc and are moving to the DS.Also most of their friends have or are getting a DS so by this xmas the last nail will be hammered into the PSP coffin in Europe at least, not in Japan obviously where there will be the usual Bushido type Sony Loyal Following lol

Horses for courses, our daughter has a DS but it has absolutely no interest for me, I don't want to play 'handheld' games, I want to play console/arcade games in my hands.

I use mine on the commute to meetings, and also for three to four hours every Saturday. I enjoy it now just as much as when I got my first one in 2005.

Couple of years back I never saw a single PSP in Japan. Maybe Monster Hunter is the game they are all playing now.

PSP is dead, commercially and I wouldn't buy a Go at all. They are very much worth getting though as there are so many great, cheap game on discs.

Once Atlus, Sega and NISA drop support it'll be dead in the west. They're the only companies really propping it up at the moment.

There must be some real money in localising games that only get <100,000 or so sales. Although that said, Kingdom Hearts BBS did surprisingly well, getting in the charts over here (being beaten largely by multiplatform titles)

That said, the PSP is going from strength to strength in Japan where it gets huge sales and is getting more RPGs and visual novels than any other console.

It's not a dead console but it's a dying console on life support in the west. Albeit one with some great games lined up (VC3, Parasite Eve 3rd birthday, FFXIII Agito)
