I play VS mode only because the single player just doesn't give me the same sweaty moments.

Of course, it was never mean't to be anything more than a VS fighter, and how could it be? The game is incredibly fast and frantic, therefore a human is your only worthy opponent. Any fighting done in single-player is just a tacky add-on to what essentially is, a party game.

I think they should have a quest mode like VF4 Evo. And you sould able to mack out your character. I also think every character should be open from the start and that console specific characters should die with SC2.

You know, I think that this is a fantastic idea. Having a proper RPG mode... Most RPGs are centered around the combat anyway, but it's just lame. It'd be like... whenever you meet someone who you're gonna fight, it switches to the side-on view, and you start beating each other up. This would work so well, I think.

And Mr. C, it would still have versus play, I assume. If they build on SCII, as opposed to starting from scratch, then it'd still have the same combat.

To be honest, I'm never expecting Evo style complexities from the SC series, so I don't see how much further they can take it. Although I'd be more than pleased to be proven wrong there.

        Anyway, it's just speculation.

BTW, anyone ever play Way Of The Samurai? Could work a bit like this...

Right, but this is what I don't get. The general gist of this thread, if I'm interpreting it right is as follows.

SC2 has an extra RPG-lite style mode that some people wish was meatier, despite the fact that, as highlighted by myself and Welrain, the series is a versus fighter first and foremost. Anything else is extra.

People want an RPG with a deeper combat element as the current method employed by modern RPGs isn't meaty enough for them.

I get these issues, but people like Ikaruga seem to be wanting a predominantly single player experience, yet are laying the gauntlet down at the feet of Namco to transform their predominantly multiplayer fighter into this RPG that they want. How about the RPG developers take on board the criticisms of their genre and respond with the changes that players like Ikaruga and Magnakai seem to want?

I just feel it slightly unfair to criticise Namco for failing to deliver in an area that they were never intending to accomodate anyway.

And Maganakai as Ikaruga oh so brilliantly pointed out earlier, we are not developers so it would be irresponsible of us to try and second guess what Namco may or may not be able to do with SC3. Whilst you fail to see where SC can go from here, as a fighting game fan (and a fan of SC especially) I am slightly more positive about what to expect from the next game in the fra.. sorry, series. I've heard all the complaints about how SC2 fails to improve over its predecessor, yet I don't personally agree with them. I've sepnt a year with the game now, and whilst the game wasn't a revolution in term of gameplay mecahnics, they were enough subtle changes to keep me happy. Doesn't detract from SC1, as it's still a brilliant title, but if I could only play one I'd have to take the sequel.

However, if the next game delivered exactly the same multiplayer experience, but a fully-fledged single player RPG, I would be disappointed. Sure the game wouldn't be any worse, but in the years of waiting I'd want something new to get into.

It might be me but does all this talk remind anyone of Jade Empire, the RPG Bioware are developing for the Xbox. It's in the general area anyway...

I think some people don't like the idea of taking the core "vs" mode of fighters and exapanding the gaming style. Personally, other than graphical improvements, I feel that the fighter genre is getting a bit stale.

Something I'd like to see... an MMORPG fighter... run around from town to town, taking part in adventures, perhaps in a party.. beating up each other with traditional fighting controls. Some with swords, some with magic attacks, some traditional chock-socky fisty-cuffs...

What's wrong with maybe asking someone like Namco to take a step in that direction? Personally, I think that'd be great fun, whilst maintaining the key vs dynamic of these games.

Surely the best way for Namco to take the Soul Calibur series forward would be to take the next game in the series online.
Forget about Sc3 being an RPG there are plenty of those already, and why dilute the spirit of the game?
But an online version of SC would enable a truly memorable gamesplaying experience. The online aspects of the game would possibly have to be Xbox exclusive as I hear the Ps2 online experience isnt up to much, and primarily developed on Xbox to allow for a more powerful graphics engine to be put in place, perhaps those arguaments about the series being no further developed than the DC iteration would cease if this was the case.
I guess until this happens Dead or Alive online will have to do, and will perhaps give an indication of the potential of Sc3

                      C', C', C'.
Don't take it to heart so much.
                      I was only speculating...

I adore the SC series for what it is. I can't begin to imagine how many hours I logged on SC1 over the years. There's no doubt that I'd want it to be a fighting game first. I just think that SCII's (RPG-lite, as you say, is a perfect description) Dungeon Master mode has the potential to be expanded into a much fuller game experience.
The travelling and story mdoes in the games have always made me curious about this possibility. Remember in Soul Calibur, it'd tell you that "You've met a mysterious stranger who has asked for your help" or something, and then you'd fight someone... Well, I just think that maybe some sort of overhead map, combined with a much better Dungeon Master mode, and a few random encounters (as much as I hate random battles, a couple of suprises every now and again wouldn't go amiss) would add a lot to the game, especially to the people who haven't got a strong videogaming community to have decent multiplayer session with.

As for SC's forthcoming (r)evolution (or whatever happens with SCIII...), I'd definitely prefer them to pour resources into genuine progression with the fighting. But... I would just like to see some kind of mode like this. I think it'd be fun, and, to be honest, that's all I want any game to be.

Baaaaaaaaaaad bwoy, SCOnline could be cool. If they sorted out the network play, and made it reeeaaaaally good, then it could be ace. Combined with some sorta character customisation thing, like in VF4 (maybe with items you find in the RPG mode ) I think it had great potential.

Someone said something about a MMORPG... *scrolls down* ScottCR.
That could be cool... maybe combine it all into one uber-game that is everything.

seriously, a MMORPG figthing beat em up would rock.. imho.

Wander the land, kicking ass, joing parties, kick even more ass, build reputations, meet other parties, kick all kinds of ass.

it would, indeed, kick an awful lot of ass.

Man this is an old idea. I'm sure many of us have thought many times about a title that incorporates all of the most accomplished titles into one big game. We'd see a GTA/Zelda/Shenmue/(insert name) title that had the fight scenes of Tekken, the reality of GT, the combat of Goldeneye and the flight physics of Pilotwings. Or something like that.

I'm sure it would be fun (well demanding at the least ) but I can't see it coming yet.

Any developers care to have nightmares of the production/integration of such a title?

PS: And think how much it would cost - Sony would see it as x number of games for the price of one and hike the price right up. Nintendo would hike it higher
