Yeah but your missing my point. Having hidden exits in levels doesn't make it better designed or suddenly make it amazing it just increases the lastability of the game. Sure Mario can do more than just jump like Sonic and has more power up's which makes the character more dynamic in the way he is used but the actual shape and progression of a level is still i.m.o not as good and def flatter and not as dynamic. I bought, played and completed MW on the Snes way back in the late 90's and as we speak i have been playing through it again on my PSP to give it another chance and i still feel exactly the same way as when i first played through it. Not only that but all the levels in design feel way too similar and i got bored by the time i got to the 5th world. I know i am in a minority in feeling that all the 2d Mario's with the exception of Yoshi's Island has average level design but i'm certainly not going to change my opinion on that. For me all the 2d MD Sonic's featured far better level design and even to this day i can go back to any of them and have great fun playing them even if they are much shorter than the 2d Mario games.

So explain how the progresson of the levels is flatter and not as dynamic?
The levels are often huge with different ways to go. Up down, back and forth and not just limited to a screen or two in the vertical plane. Also with lots of freedom to move around th world map that gives you total control of the game.
You are just a Sonic fanboy and thing the slower pace and simple visual style is dictating what you are saying.

No where near as up, down, back and forth as the 2d Sonic's. Again not arguing against the quantity in Mario World but i prefer quality and i.m.o that's why i prefer the 2d Sonics and everything your going on about in Mario World people saw most of in Bros 3.
Those aside i'd much rather play Mario Land 1, 2 Yoshi's Island, Mario 64 & Sunshine over any of the other non MD Sonic games so i must be a terrible fanboy!

Yet somehow anyone saying Mario is the best platform game around, isn't a fanboy at all.
In the end it's pointless to compare the 2 games, they're both very different even though they're in the same genre (it's like comparing Blur to GT 5) I like Sonic, but it's no Mario IV (but they again it wasn't meant be) and when it comes to platform games on the MD is doesn't get any better than Revenge (near Mario IV perfection) and the underrated Quackshot (which for me looked as good as nearly any Sonic game too)

I didn't bother getting the DX add-on.

I only just discovered this game yesterday and I am blown away.
IMO (Sega diehard) this looks like the first good Sonic game since X-treme was canned.
I hated the lanky SA re-design of the character and hated his new move set that totally detracted from the genius simplicity of the original gameplay mechanics. Homing attacks suck ass, and rail grinding sucks too. IMO Sonic Adventure was were they dropped the ball. Aside from the crap re-design and messing up the gameplay, the RPG stylings were ill suited to the hog, the level design was generally crap- either bland or on-rails, the pop punk was horrible.. etc etc. Over the years the games just got worse.
I bought Sonic 4 ep 1, but the physics were completely broken in that game, plus they used modern Sonic, ughhh. I've played a bit of Colours but it does not thrill me as I can't stand the homing attacks and rail sections.
Finally the return of the true Sonic the Hedgehog!
I think it is amazing that Sega have listened to the hardcore fans. That petition for Classic Sonic to be a playable extra in S4 I signed must have actually made an impression! I think Generations looks Amazing. ST have confirmed that you can play through the ENTIRE game as either of the Sonics and that the physics of Classic Sonic are based on Sonic1-3. The physics of the hog in the original games was part of what made them so good- playing Sonic just felt like total liberation- the way you could bounce from one enemy to another building speed was incredible. Introducing homing attacks just totally destroyed all that. Also the level design in the Classic Generations level shown looks perfect- multiple routes, incredible graphics, and a depth to the scenery that has not been seen before. I think Sega realised that to combine both versions of Sonic and styles of play would attract the largest audience.
I cannot wait.
If they get the physics right, and all the level design is as good as the classic level we've seen, I could see this being the highest scoring Sonic game since the megadrive days.Last edited by DANGEROUS-3; 01-05-2011, 13:24.
