    Mirrors Edge: Catalyst

Well, the good news is that as far as I'm aware this is the first time EA has officially stated that the game is in development. The downside is that it has apparently stalled and staff have been moved onto other titles for now.

They might stand a better chance of working out the kinks if they stopped spreading DICE so thin. Given the potential of the original I'd rather they worked on this than Need For Speed and the half dozen Battlefields on the go.

Good news that it exists, bad news that it's being stalled. Not going to argue that it wasn't flawed, but I did enjoy the original a lot.

      Fantastic news!

The first Mirrors Edge is a brilliant but flawed game, with the level design constriction being a minor issue to my enjoyment as the game felt so damn new and unique.

If they can iron out the flaws and present you with a more diverse and open world to negotiate around, then this could be really special.

Surely it would be easy to take note of what every reviewer said and pump out a winner. The TTs in this were AMAZING

Eurogamers article on this puts more of a downer on it, preferring 'rejected' to 'stalled'.

The original was one of my favourite games of that year (2007? 2008?).

Though I don't like how everyone keeps talking about flaws... What did people find flawed? Apart from a couple of technical glitches which froze the game in one area, I found it pretty much perfect. The difficulty and need to restart sections didn't bother me - the checkpoints were quite generous.

My favourite aspect was the gun play and combat. Heavy weapons which slow you down, and no silly ammo counter or HUD. It felt like holding a real gun...

I hated the fact there were portions that forced you into combat and didn't give you the chance to run away. If they focused on more of the pure platforming sections (and I think an open-world setup would lower the quality of this) then that to me would make the best Mirror's Edge game.

It's interesting that you love it for the combat and gun use, whereas I find those mechanics to be some of its weaker aspects. For me, Mirrors Edge is all about free form movement in a beautifully cold environment with a great soundtrack.

In regards to its flaws, the opening is brilliant and a great taste for what could have transpired. Stunningly high views, leaps of faith across well constructed buildings all the while using a very alien but fantastically natural control scheme. But for the rest of the game, it never reaches those vertigo inducing highs. The player is stopped one too many times, with puzzles set in confined rooms and areas where a slight failure results in a snipers bullet entering your cranium. All this is rounded off with a very uninvolving story that is told through a comic book style that does not sit well with the look of the main game.

Despite those flaws, I have owned and completed the game on 2 platforms. I loved the feeling of movement with some set pieces like the yellow building puzzle, the opening free run and a great chase with security forces making me forgive the game for some awkward moments.

it was one of my favorite games this generation, such a shame that it's been stalled. Hopefully they will get around to a new one.

The original Mirror's Edge was a flawed masterpiece, hindered by the misguided decision to include the shooter elements. These elements would have made sense if they encouraged you to use your runner skills to escape from them, but the structure and difficulty of the encouters encouraged you to resort to attacking them.

All DICE have to do is watch their own trailer to see what made the original game so great, and what they should focus on in the sequel (should one materialise).

Has anyone mentioned how flawed the first was yet... oh wait, never mind.

Thing is, it wasn't really flawed. You just had to run on easy and it was great!
