Its just looking for a tiny loophole to gain profit from. I think its pretty sad.
You shouldn't be sad, you've got all the PS3s!

Yeah, Sony definitely had a claim there. Lik-Sang was just wrong, though, and I'm enjoying the irony of Sony now being prevented from importing products into Europe.

Telling me that I'm not allowed to legally purchase something and have it sent here from another country. **** right off.

      Still a bit bitter.

Didn't something like this happen before with a Dual Shock related patent in the PS2 era? Seem to remember it having no impact.

I suspect this thing won't go on too long, it's a tit for tat patent dispute and LG's patents are of dubious worth. Sony could crush LG with their own portfolio

Another thing, they're ceased PS3's but not Sony's Blu-Ray players? How does the Blu-Ray function work differently in one than other for LG not to be pushing a blanket ban on Sony products?

It did have an impact, why do you think it took umpteen months before we got a DualShock3? The Six-axis was bundled instead to avoid the rumble patent infringement.

Could this in anyway be related to the fact that Sony can do nothing in regards to the growing PS3 piracy scene? Or am I digging too big a conspiracy hole here?

Well, most companies patent technologies simply to protect themselves should they need to enforce their patents later down the line. It's pretty much impossible to innovate these days without violating some patent held by somebody. In this case however, a patent war has broken out because Sony sued LG last year for supposedly violating their patents, so LG has done their homework and it doing the same back to them. It's all quite tit-for-tat, though I find it difficult to feel too sorry for Sony.

Patents have long since outlived their original purpose anyway, and achieve the opposite of what was intended.

LG and Sony have other legal battles going on that probably started well before the PS3 was hacked, as JP said earlier it might be an attempt from the court to have them settle things.

They appeal, and until the appeal is heard then no ban can be applied.

This kind of 'stop them selling their thing while we have our court case' isn't new, the 360 had a similar suit levelled at it a few years back that never resulted in any actual blocking.

This is apparently a 10 day injunction, which Sony have appealed. Although LG have applied to have it extended as well.

This will get extremely messy and drag in all sorts of other companies. There's long been this standoff between various tech companies, with a sort of gentlemans agreement of 'I won't sue you if you don't sue me' in place.

                          Begun the patent wars have.

Few years ago Sony started to implement rootkits into their music CDs in a very stupid attempt to stop/reduce piracy. The whole thing backfired badly, forcing Sony to stop using rootkits and recall their products, something like the old Starforce protection in PC games.

edit: there's even a wikipedia page.

                              I really don't understand this bit in the article;
'However, the majority of PS3 sales around Europe are pre-orders, meaning they are already sold before they gather dust at warehouses in the UK and elsewhere.'

Pre-orders?! Only thing that comes to mind is that it's stock for Game, Hmv or whoever that have paid up-front for the stock.
