E3 2011 Predictions

Nintendo will have to show some pretty seriously good stuff for the 3DS at E3 to hold people's attention. It's already starting to fade at retail and it needs a killer app. Problem is, I don't think anything they've announced for it so far is going to grab people. They need to accelerate the western release of the Layton game for it, and probably announce a Mario Kart for it.

Yeah, it needs some killer apps fast. Mario might be one but that could struggle to even make xmas. Not rushing Layton through the localisation process was utterly bizzarre.

Kid Icarus looks to be the first big non-port from Nintendo and the hands on impressions from it haven't really been glowing, coupled with the fact the controls screw over lefties, I'm not convinced this will be a system seller.

A date for MGS3 on 3ds would be nice. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the PS3 lineup for the rest of the year already. Anything extra is a bonus.

I don;t follow the world of XBox very closely I admit but the outlook is quite sparse for that platform at the moment isn't it? Maybe MS will bring out the big guns at E3 and announce some cool stuff.

Looking forward to Battlefield3, Skyrim and Mass Effect 3, but for new titles I expect it to be all about Kinect, Move, 3DS and Wii, none of which appeal.

FSW, you are right. After this year there isn't much for the 360 (Mass Effect 3 being the delayed exception) so I do really hope for a new console announcement, or enough interesting new stuff on current hardware to keep me going. Time for a new generation imo.

Absolute minimum I'd expect for the 720 would be an E3 2012 unveiling. Apparently MS are going to be making another big Kinect push.

- CD Projekt Red (The Witcher guys) are confirmed to be showing something new
- BF3, ME3 and SSX are getting live demos in the EA conf
- Sony have launched this E3 site - http://www.sceainvites.com/e3_2011/ - top right hints at 9 titles
- Microsoft have released this teaser

If you dig around for a better picture, you'll see that thats a sheet of stickers you can apply to various blank spaces on the press conference passes.

Reading the current round of MS rumours...

Kinect, Kinect, Kinect, XBLA and Kinect.

Shouldn't be suprised really, most of their non-Kinect stuff will be multi-platform and they'll want to show what the console can offer over both the PS3 and the Cafe. I'm just hoping for less fakery and fewer snores.

MS are incredibly unlikely to come out on top this time without some megaton exclusives, two companies showing off new consoles (plus one recently released one).

Hoping that Rare have something nice to show, it's a bit of a shame they're slowly morphing into a faceless studio that MS use whenever they need a quick release or a bit of coding for general xbox features.

SCE made a decent profit, but half of that will have been wiped by the hack if we're to beleive their own estimates. The company as a whole is making massive losses though, which makes me wonder if they have the resources to fund R&D for a new big console at all right now.

It's what people tend to forget when comparing MS to Sony. MS as a whole makes solid profits and has a lot of capital to invest in R&D. Sony is in trouble, mainly because it has it's fingers in too many pies, a lot of which are turning into money sinks.

Sony's been operating like that for donkeys years now so the PS4 isn't in trouble. Sony have long used their gaming and movie arms to support their other divisions. The movie arm has gone through a lull the last year or two due to long gestating major releases which are due over the next 3 years. If anything their performance assures the commitment to R&D on new formats to support their wider business until they can sort them out.

It's frustrating but I'd say there's a good shot of any official Sony streams getting DDOS'ed by twats. Should be lots of sites mirroring it though.

MGS Rising will probably show though it still feels like it's nowhere near ready. The 25th Anniversary isn't until next year so it's possible the 'big' thing will be a reveal of MGS5 at next years E3. I'm going to keep a vice like grip on my no doubt lost hope that we'll see something of his ZOE3 project.
