Recommend me some JRPGs for PS3

    Hey all,

I've been craving some really good JRPG's lately and it seems impossible to find many at all this generation. I have dozens upon dozens for the PS2 and PS1, but was looking for recommendations on what you guys may be able to suggest.

Games I own from this generation:
    Eternal Sonata
    Final Fantasy XIII
    Star Ocean: The Last Hope
    Tales of Vesperia
    Blue Dragon
    Lost Odyssey (love this game)
Enchanted Arms (not one of my faves)
Nier (not one of my faves either)
    Resonance of Fate

Just to say I am not a huge fan of SRPG's so games like Valkyria Chronicles would probably be a pass for me. I keep seeing games like Atelier and Hyperdimension Neptunia but I'm not entirely sure what to think of those.

Other JRPG series I'm a huge fan of are:
Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, Dragon Quest, Xenogears, Lunar, Phantasy Star. You can also guarantee any RPG by Square-Enix I would enjoy

    Thanks guys!

As sad as it is, I'm not sure there are any to recommend that aren't already on that list.

I don't know if the genre changed, or if I changed, but I haven't really been interested in a single JRPG title this generation and I used to like them very much.

It seems the same for me. All the new ones seem to be by Gust and their games seem very generic and boring.

Yeah not alot out there, maybe check out White Knight Chronicles 2 as it has 2 games in the box. Have played the first one and found it pretty average. While I wouldn't class it the same as the listed RPGs, have you considered Demon's Souls? Excellent game.

I think all you've got left is the Gust stuff, really. Their games always put me in a good mood though, they're so cheerful and they're a lot better than their simplistic visuals might imply.

This gen has been dire for JRPGs outside of handhelds. If you've got a DS or a PSP, you'll be in heaven. If not, back to the PSone collection with you.

Demon's Souls isn't a JRPG, it's barely an RPG at all, and it irritated me to the point of not even being able to play it.

As a genre the JRPG is almost dead now anyway. If you pick up a PS1 era JRPG and compare to a PS3 one, all that's changed are the visuals are a little better. Do the same with any other genre and the differences are far more marked.

It's a shame, I used to love them, but they're not doing anything new really. And on the rare occasion when they do (FF12 for example) the people of Japan kick up so much fuss they sweep it under the carpet and pretend they never did it.

JRPGs aren't dead, they've just moved onto PSP and DS.

I'd recommend giving Atelier Rorona a shot, just to try it out.

Atelier games are kinda sandboxy and are about character interactions more than plot but once you get into them, they're really addictive. Think a game based around the crafting aspect of MMOs.

Don't be afraid to move onto DS and PSP RPGs, some of the best RPGs of this generation are on them. I'd rank The World Ends With You among the top RPGs of all time.

Still, the next year should see some quality JRPGs. Tales of Graces F is apparently the best Tales of game this generation, Tales of Xillia looks promising and we should see Persona 5, FFXIII-2 and FF Versus.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have played White Knight Chronicles 1 and thought it was very meh, but did pick up II last week on release. Just haven't got around to it yet.

I do have a lot of DS and PSP RPG's, just would be nice to play a full screen HD one. Already have Tales of Graces, Tales of Xillia, FFXIII-2, and FF Versus pre-ordered so I am looking forward to those.

I have credit at Gamestation so I may try out Atelier (if I can find a copy).

What about Ar Tonelica Qoga and Hyperdimension Neptunia?

Couldn't hack 'world ends with you', having to play the game on both screens at the same time broke my brain. Tried 'Sands of Destruction' as well, and it was just pretty dull.

Sands of Destruction was boring, largely down to it having a broken battle system (either you'll defeat enemies with ease, or you won't stand a chance, there's no in between) but also because it kinda abandoned its USP fairly early on (that you're trying to destroy the world, not save it). It's a shame as it had some phenominal RPG talent working on it.

The DS Dragon Quests and FF remakes are must buys though for hardcore JRPG fans. DQIX is also great, adding new life to the franchise.

As for Ar Tonelico... I wouldn't recommend it. For the first 2/3rds it's reasonable enough but it gets really, really awful towards the end. You can read the first play thread to see how I went from liking it to hating it as I got further. I'd guess I'm a couple of hours from the end but I just can't stomach playing it any more.

I recommend Folklore. An utter delight with excellent use of SixAxis controls. Far from traditional JRPG but it is an RPG of sorts and is Japanese! Give it a go.

I'd still say it was worth giving Valkyria Chronicles a try even if you don't generally get on with SRPG's, it really is one of the best RPG's this gen and feels quite different to the other games in the SRPG genre like Disgaea, Front Mission etc. You can usually buy it for under ?15 as well so it's worth a go.

As said though, there isn't much choice, only really active RPG developer on consoles at present seems to be NIS/Gust/Idea Factory who hardly release what you could consider AAA games.

I'd probably class the Yakuza series as being RPG's as well although they're far from traditional and not to everyone's tastes I suppose.

Nier is worth a pop too. An action RPG really but a very interesting story.
