    OnLive - UK Launch

Has anybody here been playing around with OnLive now that it's officially launched in the UK?

For people that are unaware - BT customers get a free 3 month subscription to the PlayPack bundle, which actually has a half decent collection of games on it!

The first game that you purchase is ?1 also. Coupled with the money off you get for being a PlayPack subscriber, I managed to pick up Warhammer 40k Space Marine for 70p. I'd call that a bargain.

I'm running this on a 12mb~ BT DSL line with the PC connected over WiFi.

Initial impressions were a little bit weak, but extended impressions are excellent.

The latency on the menu didn't seem to be that much improved from when I played around with this on US servers, however I got into a few games and it instantly brought a smile on my face.

I've been playing Ninja Blade and Space Marine quite a lot, with absolutely no problem on either. The mouse aiming in Space Marine is excellent latency wise, and I've been getting completely sucked into the gameplay without being reminded that the game is running off a video stream. You literally do forget that fact.

There are some games that don't work so well - I didn't have a great time with Dirt 3, and Saints Row 2 seems to be running at 2x speed permanently.

Nonetheless, I am very impressed, and I honestly do believe that OnLive is a worthwhile gaming platform right now.

When the iPad client comes out I'll be incredibly happy!

    Any thoughts or impressions?

I thought it was pretty cool when playing on US servers months ago! Had some great lag-free games of UTIII.

Is there any difference in entry mode for UK? Or will it just detect where you are?

You will need to go to www.onlive.co.uk and make another account. The account you made previously will be linked to the US version.

You also can't use the same username/email address.

I read up on this yesterday when everywhere started to report on the launch. It comes across like a very well considered attempt though one that's set to ultimately fail from the off. In the long term they're going to need a key draw for players as the online model they're taken is only going to really appeal to core gamers and they games selection isn't up to date, strong or cheap enough to compete with traditional formats. I know they're always eager to big up how due to the way it works they could have PS4 level visuals without the need to buy new hardware but lets face it, that will never happen until the PS4 itself is out. It's the new 3DO

The queues of people at the EG Expo today to register and pick up a free set top box were massive, and stayed that way the whole day.

It strikes a chord with gamers for sure, but I think if you're outside the major cities it just isn't going to work. Yet.

I downloaded the client and bought Deux Ex for ?1 in their special offer. The client seem to use about 6.3Mbps (download) of my broadband - experience was good but if that amount of bandwidth is the norm then you would download 133GB of data for a 40 hour game. Which is a lot

Make sure you have unlimited broadband options people

I'm having trouble just getting into a game and it keeps complaining about network issues though everything else that uses the net is fine. If it only uses 6Mbps then I should be laughing but maybe it's my ISP throttling it somehow.

Assuming I can actually get it working properly I'll grab Deus Ex for a quid to see how it runs, maybe Space Marine instead but probably Deus Ex.

I think there are still a few teething problems for sure. My service is absolutely excellent, while my friend has serious connection problems.

Are you connecting wired or via wifi?

I've emailed support asking to have my account switched from US to UK. I'll let you know what they say.

On Live tech built into TVs. The future has just been called!

I am very interested to see where this goes, although might they start charging different amount for graphic tiers? Xbox graphics ?6.99 per month, Fully specced PC graphics ?15.99 per month. Can the graphics just change over night if they updated the hardware at their end?

Well they can't so full spec pc graphics at all. It's kind of like blurred xbox quality at the moment. I think they basically need just way more bandwidth to get the res and colour depth up.

Well thanks to Silvergun i just signed up for 3 months free of gaming on Onlive, ive got a 8MB connection and was using my wifi laptop to run Onlive and i say i was pretty surprised how good it looked and ran for a saturday evening, in the package for the 3 months is 103 games of varying quality but some great games borderlands, Batman AA, Just Cause 1 & 2, plus your 1st game cost only 70p to purchase from marketplace so i choose Warhammer which is a steal at that price, well everybody said it couldnt be done , but somehow they've got it up and running and im impressed so far.
