Sony has now shifted 7 million PlayStation 4 units, the console manufacturer has announced. This figure was taken as of …
As of 6th April PS4 sales stand at 7m units.
The figure comes in 2m higher than Sony's sales projections. A month ago XBO stood at close to 4m whilst as of end of 2013 WiiU stood at 5.86m so PS4 could well be market leader of the new machines already

The NPD Group have announced video game sales figures through end of March which promptly led to both Microsoft and Sony issuing press releases this week as to how many Xbox One and PlayStation 4 units they’ve respectively sold. Sony have announced that over 7 million PS4 units have been “sold through” to consumers, whereas […]
Apparently MS says they've sold 5m units to retailers of XBO, as Sony's figures were sales to consumers it means MS is likely a clear 2.5m behind.
After 6 months of the 'next gen' the current standings are:
1-Playstation 4
2-Nintendo Wii U
3-Xbox One
Still waiting on Wii, PS3 and 360 figures which showeda closer tussle last year

In the US, in March alone for just XBO, Titanfall sold 925,000 units
No figures but the best selling next gen title is Call of Duty: Ghosts, on current gen it's only been beaten by Skylanders: Swap Force
And EA makes a profit thanks to a good Xmas

It would be a shame if they only released handheld games though, a the way round this would be to produce a handheld that lets you connect to the tv easily when your at home and continue playing when your away, they would probably mess this up by calling it the Nintendo wii-ds-go and confuse there target audience even more though .

N64 and GameCube weren't flops, they made tons of money for Nintendo. With the kind of margins they made on the hardware, they could happily come 2nd and 3rd and still make a boatload of cash.
They should keep making hardware. Iwata has said the next home console/handheld will have a unified development platform so they will likely run the same games by and large. I think that makes sense as it seems like Nintendo struggle a bit to support two platforms simultaneously.

Some kind of way to unify their console and handheld development would make sense, even if it results in essentially a handheld with some kind of TV dock.
Nintendo have been shaving off their internal development studios for years, farming out an increasing amount of games to external development teams. As it is, spreading these development efforts and third party efforts across two platforms is proving to be problematic. Third party developers especially are more likely to embrace a single Nintendo development platform - most publishers and developers don't have the resources to support both the 3DS and the WiiU in addition to their support for other platforms (PS4, Xbone, PC, Vita, PS3, 360 etc.). One of the two Nintendo platforms is usually a casualty.

To really offer a unified home and portable console Nintendo would have to find a way to offer touch controls on a TV, or drop the touch control methods altogether and make a more traditional device, by doing that two of the 3DS's/DS key features are lost, the touch input and the second screen.

We'll find out soon how E3 pans out but given the conservative projections for the next 12 months and that two of Nintendos biggest ip are out in that period, I can't shake the feeling Nintendo will minimise its spending on WiiU here on out and that they aren't going to announce anything too major for the system at E3. They might show off early next Zelda but if I put my sensible cap on I'd say it'd probably be better for them to hold that back at this point as a future launch game for the next console they make

Such an idea would need some fine tuning, though. Maybe next gen, when the cost of such a portable device at the required power would have dropped,
