That would have been a more sensible approach but they have already done the former, so swapping it around now isn't an option. An actual tablet and dock would have made more sense but any tablet is always going to be compared unfavorably to an android or ios tablet in what you can actually do with it.
There never going to win over the casual market in this respect unless they partner up and i doubt Nintendo would be happy to bring out a tablet that has android on it considering they have always made money out of the Virtual console stuff and you can get most of this for free on android with the right emulator.
There is demand for a cheap multimedia gaming tv device and Nintendo have the catalog and games to make it work on the gaming side, amazon fire tv, ouya, apple tv ect all gained good publicity, just no ones done a particularly good device yet.
