    Xbox Live phished/hacked/somethinged

So just read the stories doing the rounds on the net, time to check your email and bank account details, seems pretty limited so far.http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/...cked-accounts/

Xbox LIVE has NOT been hacked. Thread title wants changing because it's just scaremongering.

It's isolated cases and probably a result of phishing or other nefarious means. This isn't PSN again, or at least there's precisely zero evidence to suggest that at the moment.

What a misrepresentative title. If I go and hack your googlemail account that doesn't mean Gmail has been hacked...

Shouldn't the title be.... 'EA gets hacked, some people used the same details for xbl'

my friend txt me last night to say whilst he was on xbox live he was signed out of his account as he got the message your account has been signed in elsewhere..

he tried a few times to sign back in but on each occasion got a error message... He then tried to recover his account but still got a error code upon each try..

He eventually logged into xbox.com after becoming worried where he changed his password.. He noticed he has 10000 ms points next too his gamerscore and checked his email to show that 2x 2000 and 1x 6000 points had been purchase to the tune of around ?85

his bank have told him he needs to take it up with MS and they are now looking into it and told him not to spend them points..

I believe this was the hacking that you mention.. How the hell have they done that though ????

Loads of websites have been hacked lately, EA's most recently but not long before that several Sony sites.

Basically the hackers have got all the usernames and passwords for a given site and then they go around and try it with paypal and xbox and ebay etc. Looks like they got lucky with him as he must use the same username and password in several places (as I do).

Now is a good time to go and change passwords for anything that is connected to you bank account or credit cards in any way.

Since the Sony escapades, which as expected have all but been forgotten already, hacking is becoming all too common which just goes to prove how unacceptable the original incident was.

That said, my missus hacked into my pants gaining access to all my confidential material but you don't catch me complaining

                  It's Phishing, not Hacking.

Different password for every site where your credit card is linked people...

You shouldn't be, for example, using the same password on here as you do on XBox Live...

                      Just happened to me

Couldn't log in or recover the tag. Was working yesterday. Seems sometime today, someone got access to my account, changed my password (no email confirmation, which I would of thought was standard these days), spent the 2100 points I had, then charged ?85 to the attached paypal account (which I had tried several times to get unlinked but MS wouldn't have it).

I've regained control of the account, logged a call with MS and PayPal.

                      ****ers.

The F word and C word really need unbanning for this thread alone.

Great. Live account now suspended (3 weeks, but "recently it's been as fast as 10 days) pending an investigation. Why? Surely just stop all payments and purchases, but don't take away Battlefield 3!!

Not happy. For the record, they purchased:

DXHR The Missing Link Premium Theme Xbox Theme 05/11/2011
                          Dante's Inferno™ Game 05/11/2011
                          Alan Wake Game 05/11/2011
MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3 Game 05/11/2011
                          Resident Evil 4 Game 05/11/2011
                          ENSLAVED™ Game 05/11/2011

I'm still amazed this isn't picked up automatically. Someone signs in with my account on a different console (console id and sn), recovers the gamertag to that Xbox, immediately changes the password - at this stage I've had NO email confirming the password change, the minimum of what I'd expect. They they buy lots of stuff - I have only ever purchased arcade with my live points, never via PayPal (was only linked when I took advantage of that ?1 a month for Live deal from a few months back).

Surely the instant purchases after changing password, recovering and new console id, and completely different ip (I assume) should of raised some concerns??

I am SOOOOO pissed off at missing Battlefield. It's not like I can even create a new Live account for a month, as then I'd need to buy an online pass. Ahhhhhh!

That is just crazy. Microsoft need to do something to tighten up their early warning system. Has anyone established any pattern to this apart from the EA connection?

i took advantage of the 1 month of live offer for ?1 recently.

i couldnt remove my card until it expired so i phoned them up yesterday to remove the card. only way they could do it was by removing the 1 month offer aswell.

i mentioned the reason i wanted it done was because of the reports of some peoples cards being used without their knowledge. he certainly knew it was going on and recommended i use pre paid vouchers in future.
