There was an interesting piece in the newspaper this morning about HMV saying that since the collapse scare they've renegotiated their terms with distributors which should half their ?180m debt within three years, additionally they've sold Waterstones, are preparing to sell the HMV Live section of their group and have increased year on year sales for the last quarter by 8%. This might not work but it's nice to see they're taking their situation seriously, something GAME badly needs to look at.

It also seems daft basing a new business model on the sale of items that are falling in demand (physical CDs).....
I don't know what the answer is for them continuing to make money, but I'm pretty certain it involves concentrating on improving http://www.hmvdigital.com/ or providing their own version of napster. I have a friend that no longer uses a HDD for his Sonos system and purely gets it all online via napster because everything he wants to listen to is available on there for ?10pcm. I'd do the same but napster is missing a lot of old music I still listen to (at least it was last time I trialled it).

I heard about this a few weeks back, but don't know the whole story re: T&Cs.
Sounds like a decent idea, if they can pull it off properly.
If I was writing the T&Cs it'd be something like:
?1 per acceptable item
Credit can only be spent on new goods.
Otherwise, HMV stores will become an entity where taking 2 DVDs in gives you 1 new film!
I think they should grade the costs too, rather than selling everything at ?2, and maybe hold items released within the last 3 months off the used shelves or something.
If it is genuinely ?1 per item, and sell at ?2, surely they'll loose LOTS, especially since the HMV back-catalogue prices are usually insanely high...
Anyone know the stores in the trial?

Just a bump of this to say that it has now rolled out to around a third of the stores in the company. Post trial the trade-in price was reduced to 50p/item (no cash option) but has been upped again to ?1 for September. My Wii U purchases will be solely funded through this - I have bought so much over the 10 years I've worked with them & much of it has sat in boxes or on shelves untouched, since I last moved to this town, some 6 years ago. Clearly back when I had no kids & much more of a desposable income, I didn't exhibit much of a Quality Control purchases system. 30% staff discount? I'll buy it! I am on the verge of investing in an iTunes Match subscription though, more as a means of a back up for all the albums I've been copying to my HDD of late.

If they have now reduced the prices of the trade ins. It might be better to use Music Magpie, as I had do many CDs the app let me scan them all which was nice. I had about 300 CDs and got ?150 which ain't bad. I was thinking about using the HMV Trade thing as love HMV and used to work their for 10 years. But would have been a hassle gettin all the CDs to ye store. As at the time Derby store was not doing it and gettin the CDs to Oxford would have been a Logistics nightmare. Their offer sounds quite good though I would consider going to HMV with my DVDs and they gave me like ?20 trade for PES 2012 a few months ago, thought I'd only get ?5 so was surprised.Last edited by JU!; 16-09-2012, 06:49.
