Yeah I know what you mean. I was playing it and got half way through when I realised I wasn't really enjoying it. I thought to myself they can't make a 2D Mario like they used too but I did go into game hoping to recapture the feeling of Super Mario World.

Then I came to realise I am not 13 any more and I cried a little tear.

I really like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, it just didn't have the right visuals, it was too sterile and too much like the child-ish world of Super Mario Sunshine. If it had a cel-shaded SMW or SMB3-retro look it would have been AMAZING!

What I would love to see on Wii U is a 2D Super Mario Galaxy... (So a bit like Angry Birds Space?) I think it would work really well and be a very different experience from both SMG and past 2D Mario's

Having replayed SMW last summer I don't think it is your age. NSMB is a bit soulless, if fun. The 3D visuals just have little charm compared to the sprites of old. On the other hand the tiny HD flat looking sprites you regularly get on the HD consoles are just as charmless.

Mario on SNES looked rotund, the visuals looked vibrant and a million miles away from being flat like they are. That is the issue I feel.

On top of that, I think I simply got more absorbed into the SMW world itself more than NSMB. I put real effort into looking closely at the SMW world map and trying to figure out which stages would contain all the secret exits etc.

I wasnt to fussed about the wii mario at first, but ended up loving it. It was a lot of fun with some brilliant level design and creative ideas and was a beautifully brutal game to master, and i love that irony. But it was bland. It wasnt overly pretty. The creative freedom was noticably restricted by the visual presentation....

However Mario Galaxy and Mario 3DS are something else entirely. They really are amazing - even with all the love, the ten tens, they dont receive enough praise for what they actually do so seemingly effortlessly while other studios struggle to even hint at it. They are so far ahead of everything else even remotely similar, its actually a bit depression sometimes.

I would be really happy with a new wii-like mario because it will be familar while offering new playgrounds to explore.....

....but a new 3D Mario - Galaxy or 3DS style - on the WiiU will, for me, would be very special indeedy

From the looks of last year's tech demo, it's going to be NSMB Wii 2:

              [HIDE]

              [/HIDE]

I'll be disappointed if so - because as everyone's already said, NSMB Wii felt very soulless. The art was bland, and the plodding handling felt like a step backwards (imo) from the zippy agility of Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island.

I suppose Nintendo is positioning the 2D Mario games as a "gateway drug" to entice new audiences... leaving Kirby/Donkey Kong to fly the flag for charm and style.

There is already a 2d mario game being made for 3DS,

The wii u versions will likely be a 3D Word version to show off the stunning graphics , i expect nsmbMii will just be something bundled with the console.

We probably won't ever see that NSMBMii game. Nintendo showed the Gamecube with 'Mario 128' and a Zelda Tech Demo that look nothing like the games that came from those franchises (Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker). The Wii U tech demos will likely be the same, NSMBMii looked like a quick upscale port of NSMBWii to show off 2D Mario in HD with the Mii's there to differentiate it.

All the Wii U tech demos look like they were cobbled together in a few weeks with very "Wii-ish" elements. I think the hardware was rushed out to make E3 which makes sense since it was only about 6 weeks before E3 any external devs saw the Wii U and the only Nintendo game 'officially' slated for Wii U so far is Pikmin 3... Which we only know of because it had already been announced for Wii (Dec 2010-ish release) and Miyamoto was specifically asked if it had been cancelled after two E3s without it being shown. What's likely is it was iced by Miyamoto after meetings about tablet controllers and HD sparked his creative juices. Then once the hardware was roughly in place they look to have kicked up development again. Which I think makes sense because there are seemingly ZERO Nintendo "franchise" games in development for Wii, and the only game in 2011 with pedigree was Skyward Sword, the only other notable Wii games at all seem to be Japanese RPGs that were probably already quite far into lengthy development cycles.

Maybe... but the quote at the start of the thread suggests that this will break the trend.

"Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo."

Title of the thread needs changing BTW ... Some of the predictions above are quite amusing given what we know now ....

Anyway .. apparently its running native 1080p which you would expect from this sort of game .. will look pretty stunning with the right set up.

GamesRadar+ takes you closer to the games, movies and TV you love.

Or not as the case may be:

Slightly worrying if true as I would exepct a game like to be 1080p native, if this can't do it .. what can?

"New Super Mario Bros. U is the first side-scrolling Mario title since 1992′s Super Mario World to include a seamless World Map, with named worlds and courses as well as secret exits and shortcuts. Along the way, a creature named Nabbit may appear at any course marker, and players must catch the Nabbit to recover items that have been stolen from Toad."
Just read the above from Nintendo Insider. This is more of what I wanted to hear. A huge map with secrets like Mario World than the lazy layouts in past NSMB games.
