It depends who they're trying to target. A game like this is never going to be anything more than niche, so they're clearly targetting an audience base that they already have.

Also, with this relatively small scale of development, developers can afford to be a bit more emotional with their choice of format. That's why people release games for old formats.

Update #1: Our 25K Goal Reached - More Goals to Come!

Yahoooo! We just reached our goal of $25,000 for Redux: Dark Matters in only 5 days!!!
We couldn't have done it without you and we can't express how much we appreciate all of your pledges, seriously. Thank you for supporting this game.
With that said, we've got some exciting new goals we are going to set for the remaining 25 days. We are going to release this information in our next update very soon in the form of "stretch goals".

In other words, we are going to set some additional milestones - that if reached, will bring new special 'additions', 'content' and other cool things to Redux: Dark Matters!
We still have Dreamcast limited editions and soundtracks left - so you can still pledge for this project!

I'm not really a fan of these shooters so it's not worth me doing but I have to admit, for collectors it's a great idea and I do kind of love that the Dreamcast is still getting new releases 13 years in.

Update #2: Stretch Goals - Additional Player Ship with More Weapons & Another Stage!

The purpose of these stretch goals is to bring new features to the game.
We thought long and hard about it and we decided to make the goals solely about making Redux: Dark Matters bigger and better!

Here are our goals:
• $40,000: EXTRA SHIP WITH NEW WEAPONS (see picture for additional ship mockup!)

• $60,000: ANOTHER STAGE, "DARK PLANET" (see picture background!)

Remember, the Sega Dreamcast version is limited to only 1000 copies ever to be produced!

Help us spread the word to reach these goals and make Redux: Dark Matters even bigger and better!

I keep getting tempted by this and then leaning away because of the xbl/psn releases. Only a short time.left too. Anyone able to cinfirm if the framerate is as low as all the vids make it look?

5 hours left to go on this and for the $100 pledges they've added a steelbook. It's a shame it's likely to miss it's $60,000 target as they would have added an extra stage and 2 player

Deadline now passed - total raised $53,121.

It'll be interesting to see if they include an extra stage or 2 player, seeing as they did rather well overall.

Got sucked into getting the steelbook. Tho' I'm not entirely sure, I think it's the first and only steelbook for the Dreamcast?

The extra stage is not going to happen but they are looking at the possibility of still adding the two player mode.

The Demo runs in 540p window mode on Windows XP/Vista/7. You might use the "Redux_Configuration_Utility" to cutomize your controls for game controller and keyboard.
Now let's shoot some Robots in space!

Autumn now for the DC and iOS versions. I guess the votes in favour of the extra level have added a fair bit to the development time. I'll need to borrow a computer from someone to get a shot of the demo.
