Square Enix has ceased development of Final Fantasy Versus 13 more than six years after the project was first announced…
A report has suggested that Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been axed after 6 long troubled years in development. More details for the FFXIII project are expected in September which is mooted to be based around this closing title, Final Fantasy XIII-3.

I just don't understand their fixation with FFXIII. It's not their best entry or most popular yet they seem intent on flogging it to death. Following it up with a proper thought out FFXV would have been much better... that and ceasing classing the online titles as numbered main entries in a lame attempt to convince people they're bigger releases than they are.

I beg to differ, XI has been one of the greatest Final Fantasies I've played. I would not have done so for over 6 years otherwise.
XI has its own stories, very good stories which are made all the better because you can play them with actual people as opposed to questionable AI, thanks to expansion packs and add-ons, that makes it a perfectly viable entry to me.
Yes it costs money to play a month, but the ?8 I've been paying is less than a pint or two on an evening out.

Speaking of which, what happened with FFXIV? It kind of vanished. Does it still exist? Did it ever make it to consoles? It's weird how it seems to have been swept under a carpet. Its music isn't even featured in Theatrhythm even though it's well within the anniversary period and, if I remember correctly, it was the return of Uematsu. Weird...
I've often been tempted to give FFXI a go but never did. It has what is easily my favourite FF opening though. When I bought the OST years ago, it came with a DVD with the opening and I must have watched it about 20 times in a row. It's fantastic.

XIV bombed quite hard and the dev team were rather unceremoniously replaced about two months after launch. The new producer (Naoki Yoshida) and team have been spending the last 18 months trying to not only develop the current game to ensure the (dwindling) playerbase that stuck around have something to do and fix some of the more pressing issues the game had, whilst also working on the V2.0 relaunch scheduled for later this year.
2.0 is supposed to be, pretty much, the game starting again from scratch. For the last 6 months or so in game, one of the world's moon (Dalamund) has been getting gradually larger as time passes. This is reflected in the new storyline for the game whereby the Garlean Empire (the bad guys essentially, or at least some of them) are using Dalamund as a weapon (Meteor basically) that will eventually crash down on the world. When this happens is when we get 2.0.
It's been described in similar terms to World of Warcraft's Cataclysm expansion whereby the entire world will be reformed after this happens with new races playable, a new game map, new quests, new gameplay mechanics, new story (the old story will be lost forever) etc. Whether it's enough to save the game is another question.
The PS3 version will supposedly enter beta at the same time as 2.0 launches.

XI contains everything that characterises what a Final Fantasy game is. The fact that it takes place with thousands of other players doesn't negate this fact.
To this day it still amuses me how some people seem personally offended by the fact that S-E dared to number their MMOs.Last edited by C'; 21-07-2012, 10:14.
