I got my gamecube on import when it first game out, and was really impressed.
Luigis mansion looked fantastic, with the cool ghost effects. SSBM was fast and furious, a little too fast some people would think, but the fun of collecting trophies was great. Pikmin was unusual, but addictive as hell and so pretty. I couldn't get into monkey ball, but i'm not doubting it's a great game, just not my cup of tea.
Since then nothing, with the exception of Animal Crossing, which is a game I still play pretty much every day.
I know people love Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Mario Kart and Metroid, but all these titles left me really cold.
Sunshine is pretty, but fairly boring. The collect the blue coins routine seems to be added on as an afterthought to make the game that little bit longer. The graphics and sound were great, but the game was so dull after a couple of hours play. Nowhere near as magical as Mario 64.
Zelda seemed to much like Majoras mask. Too much backtracking, dicking about with the wind and the main story line seemed linear. I know it wasn't, there were hundreds of little sidequests, but it didn't seem to have the freedom of Ocarina Of Time. There was no feeling of Majesty like when you first start Ocarina and things are unlocked slowly. It seemed a case of "Theres a boat, off you go". It just seemed shallow and pretty superficial.
Metroid was really enjoyable. Hard, but enjoyable. The graphics were good, loading was impressive and the sound was cool. I still return to this, but I play Halo a hell of a lot more.
And now Mario Kart. Took mine back this morning. It's just poor. The graphics are adequate, not entirely sure if I like the cartoon look though. The handling is pretty hard initially, but after a couple of goes you can get used to it. My biggest gripe it think is the track design. It's just so bland and unimaginitive. There's none of the exploration that was in the 64 version. Remember how you could drive around the castle? that was a great little touch. This has very little imagination in any of the tracks i've seen (admittedly, i couldn't be arsed unlocking the last four, but i'm betting rainbow road is still a fun free zone). When i first saw the review scores in Famitsu, I was pretty excited. The reviewer at IGN got a fair bit of stick for his review, but I think he's pretty much bang on.
I don't know whats happening with Nintendo as of late. Since Hiroshi Yamauchi left, it seems that the games have gone downhill.
A lot of people will disagree, fair enough, but this is only my opinion.
If Mario Kart was released with the same design, but with different characters, and on a different format, the reviews would be average i'd imagine. The excitement of a Nintendo release is something that other publishers would die for, but recently, I don't feel they've been delivering the goods.
Miyamoto has his fingers in too many different pies. Nintendo seem to be using his name to push all of their titles, by giving him a credit on it. Can anyone name three other developers at Nintendo?
When Nintedno made great games, It couldn;t market them or sell them. Now it's making average titles, and it still can't sell them. Sounds a bit Sega to me, although Seag has made some great games again recently.
