Nintendo: Not as good as they were.

I got my gamecube on import when it first game out, and was really impressed.

Luigis mansion looked fantastic, with the cool ghost effects. SSBM was fast and furious, a little too fast some people would think, but the fun of collecting trophies was great. Pikmin was unusual, but addictive as hell and so pretty. I couldn't get into monkey ball, but i'm not doubting it's a great game, just not my cup of tea.

Since then nothing, with the exception of Animal Crossing, which is a game I still play pretty much every day.

I know people love Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Mario Kart and Metroid, but all these titles left me really cold.

Sunshine is pretty, but fairly boring. The collect the blue coins routine seems to be added on as an afterthought to make the game that little bit longer. The graphics and sound were great, but the game was so dull after a couple of hours play. Nowhere near as magical as Mario 64.

Zelda seemed to much like Majoras mask. Too much backtracking, dicking about with the wind and the main story line seemed linear. I know it wasn't, there were hundreds of little sidequests, but it didn't seem to have the freedom of Ocarina Of Time. There was no feeling of Majesty like when you first start Ocarina and things are unlocked slowly. It seemed a case of "Theres a boat, off you go". It just seemed shallow and pretty superficial.

Metroid was really enjoyable. Hard, but enjoyable. The graphics were good, loading was impressive and the sound was cool. I still return to this, but I play Halo a hell of a lot more.

And now Mario Kart. Took mine back this morning. It's just poor. The graphics are adequate, not entirely sure if I like the cartoon look though. The handling is pretty hard initially, but after a couple of goes you can get used to it. My biggest gripe it think is the track design. It's just so bland and unimaginitive. There's none of the exploration that was in the 64 version. Remember how you could drive around the castle? that was a great little touch. This has very little imagination in any of the tracks i've seen (admittedly, i couldn't be arsed unlocking the last four, but i'm betting rainbow road is still a fun free zone). When i first saw the review scores in Famitsu, I was pretty excited. The reviewer at IGN got a fair bit of stick for his review, but I think he's pretty much bang on.

I don't know whats happening with Nintendo as of late. Since Hiroshi Yamauchi left, it seems that the games have gone downhill.

A lot of people will disagree, fair enough, but this is only my opinion.

If Mario Kart was released with the same design, but with different characters, and on a different format, the reviews would be average i'd imagine. The excitement of a Nintendo release is something that other publishers would die for, but recently, I don't feel they've been delivering the goods.

Miyamoto has his fingers in too many different pies. Nintendo seem to be using his name to push all of their titles, by giving him a credit on it. Can anyone name three other developers at Nintendo?

When Nintedno made great games, It couldn;t market them or sell them. Now it's making average titles, and it still can't sell them. Sounds a bit Sega to me, although Seag has made some great games again recently.

One little pointer. Nintendo don't credit Miyamoto as a developer, they have been putting him on the credits as either an executive or a producer.

Go to the mario kart topic and tell me how you managed to work out multiplayer was crap form 1 hours play on 8 different modes and now we find out, without opening the 4 most interesting tracks. (therefore you couldn't have unlocked the extra 2 battle mode tracks).

Oh and IMO Sega are making worse games now than they did on the Dreamcast. The dreamcast had some fantastic games from them. Just because they didn't sell, doesn't mean they weren't good.

Is there really any point in this thread?

It is just covering the same old tired ground.

Fine, so you didnt enjoy SMS, WW etc. Just learn from this and stop buying Nintendo games.

        Buy the games you enjoy.

There are still plenty of us out there who loved SMS, WW etc and personally I believe these may well have been better than their prequels.

I cant really be bothered going over my reasons, because this has all been covered so many times before.

It is obvious what you should do - make sure you pick the sort of games that appeal to you and dont bother with the games that dont.

It is clear the approach Nintendo are taking doesnt appeal to you, and so dont bother with their games.

          Oh please...

SMS was fun, Metroid was fun and, having not played it yet due to a knackered thumb but know a few mates who have, I'm sure MKD is fun as well... btw.. .best MK version is GBA version imho so far... no one seems to mention this though.

It's getting a bit annoying that on almost every message board about gaming, always up at the top is "Nintendo is teh doomed", "Nintendo aint what they used to be", "Nintendo are teh kiddy"... It's a self fullfilling prophecy... people generate enough buzz then they'll convince themselves it's true. MS and Sony marketting have managed to convince folks that Nintendo is only for kids, heck, in the IGN review, Fran openly states that MKD is a game for kids.

perhaps your gaming tastes have changed, nostalgia keeps you still enjoying the old games you grew up with, but, perhaps you'd rather play GTA, Tony Hawk or whatever... and that's cool...

but that doesn't mean that Nintendo are getting worse or going downhill...

I've got all 3 and the cube library is bigger than the other 2 combined... I've got more games for the cube than I had for the N64.. and my GBA library is almost as big as my cube library.. and those games are great as well.

Gaming is a hobby to have fun, if you don't find particular games fun anymore, then don't blame the producer... you may not enjoy Disney films anymore (but, with rose tinted glasses and a hearty pint full of nostalgia you may still swear that some of their early 80's output is classic :|), but, that's not Disney's fault... you've grown up and your tastes have changed. IMHO, TWW has more charm, emotion and sheer joyfull playability that the entire Xbox library combined... SMS, as Edge stated, is still the 2nd best platformer ever. Jak'n'Daxter... with that hard edge "mature" stylee and pseudo platforming come GTA gaming shmorgasborg.. (sp?).. gimme a break.

With regard to Metroid, you love Halo, most of us do (myself included), but Metroid is a fundamentally different game.. the onus is on exploration, jumping, power-ups etc... you shoot stuff on the way... Just like the classic 2D metroids.. so don't go in expecting Halo.

For me, this generation, Nintendo and the gamecube have still delivered the highest number of fantastic gaming experiences... first party and 2nd/3rd party exclusives on the gamecube are second to none in my opinion.

... and it sounds as though you haven't played FZero GX yet... perhaps you should.

(sorry if this is dis-jointed... just up, saturday morning.. sore thumb.. )

Hey I forgot about that game completely! Its probably the worse one in my opinion due to the courses not really having much to do with mario and my nostalgia clouded view of the snes one but its still a cracking game. In fact the courses in MKD have the same sort of style as Super Circuit, i.e. ultra colourful.

              oh.. btw...

I never owned a SNES, I was a Megadrive man... (oh how I wish they'd do a new version of Immortal.. but anyway).

I played SNES MK in my yoof at friends and enjoyed it immensely, however, recently went back to it on SnesX on da 'box and erm.. well.. it was really a case of rose tinted glasses imho. It's still fun, but, man.. has it aged. And only 2 players and those big chunky sprites (in comparision, GBA sprite work is v.nice).

anyway.. I've probably blasphemed now.. so I'll shut up.

I'm curious about what they've done with 1080:avalanche. I haven't played a demo of the game, but the impressions on the internet and the videos seem good. Ah... well... just a couple weeks and we'll find out.

You have nothing new or intelligent to say, and your taste in games sucks.

There is a mountain of **** you can fling at Nintendo, but you ****ed up every shot.

SSBM, Animal Crossing and Luigi's Mansion are great games but The Wind Waker is mediocre? What's the matter with you?

When all is said and done SSBM really did lack depth in terms of strategy. SMS is possibly my favourite 3D Mario as the camera is usually more responsive. Plus it reminds me of lazy summer days. I get a lump in my throat every time I hear the tunes from it.

MP, TWW weren't bad or crippled or flawed or mediocre, their playing style just didn't suit me. Which is fair enough. Both were highly original concepts - changing wind and scanning and had some fun moments. It is only because of Nintendo's usually consistently high output that people could perceive them to be as disappointing. Even Doshin the Giant, a game with (for me) an intolerably slow pace, was highly innovative.

People seem to forget just how many times the incompetent clods called Crispin had to use the Ocarina in OOT.

But everyone is entitled to their opinion. But quite frankly, last year it was an Xbox Chrimbo for me with Blinx, SC and Hitman 2. (yeah, yeah I didn't think OXM UK were that biased. Knew it for sure when ETM was reviewed). This year I'm getting all horny over Mario and Luigi, F-Zero and MKD.

Plus I can't wait for the Paper Mario release in Q1 2004, as well as all the Pokemon games. Oh and Stage Debut. Simply because it appears that Iwata-san went insane when he approved that one.

And F-Zero. But Sonic Adventure 2: Battle? Bug-me-do!

                            Some fair points in reply.

I do like F-zero, i thought it was really exciting and the sense of speed was fantastic. looking at some of the replies, my taste in games is not as it was, but i think thats a combination of whats released and what I buy.

None of the new updates on Gamecube (with the exception of Metroid) have really differed from older versions, but this is the same on all platforms (again, with the exception of the GTA series).

I agree that Halo is very different to Metroid. Metroid was really good, but nothing i hadn't seen before.

The last games i enjoyed were SSX3 and freedom fighters. Both EA, both slickly presented and both good fun.

scotcr made a good point. Maybe it is my tastes that are changing, but goddamn, you can't beat that Animal Crossing!!

I'm aware of your crappy opinions that suck.

I am speaking here comparitively. The Wind Waker is mediocre in comparison to ... Luigi's Mansion? Animal Crossing? Super Suck Brothers? Hey, whatever you say.

                              Another good Sega game:

Pinball of the Dead. Hugely underrated.

Somebody should probably chime in with Virtua Fighter 4, even though I can't ****ing stand it.
