A long time I think. There are always new kids who haven't played Mario, Pok?mon etc before, and they seem to have a very enduring appeal. I was a kid during the Pok?mania of the late 90s when you could buy the cards in practically any shop (no matter what it mainly sold) and images of the monsters and so on seemed inescapable, and it amazes me how popular the series continues to be with kids.

Mario Galaxy and Mario 3DS put an entirely new spin on the Mario series - that only happened a couple years back. Mario himself is a cool little character and if they manage to release new experiences that reinvent the wheel here and there, like they did with Galaxy, i'm hoping Mario stays around for a very very long time indeed.
The Wii U itself for me has been an absolute dream. I'm so chuffed with it I seriously hope Nintendo sort their marketing out - and get those initial installs fixed - so more people can experience it. Currently there is too much confusion about what Wii U actually is - they need to fix that asap.
But, for me personally... I havent had so much fun with a console in years. NintendoLand is a work of genius, best couch play since N64, Miiverse is worth the pricetag alone for me - so polite, friendly, positive, totally addictive - actually makes going back to forums difficult - the gamepad is a fantastic piece of kit, New Mario is the best 2D Mario since Mario World and ZombiU is my 2012 GOTY. Once the true system sellers start to trickle out... i think WiiU will see a huge turn around with public oponion, much like we saw with the 3DS - and it deserves to.
Nintendo certainly have a lot to do over the next year, but im excited.

Nyko have announced a $25 battery for the gamepad that lasts 3 times longer
For $25 it might be worth a punt

Nintendo need to sort this eshop nonsense out sharpish. I actually wanted to buy a ridiculously overpriced Ninja Gaiden 3 just because I wanted it now and Amazon have a 1-3 week wait on orders for it at the moment. Access to this item is limited to 11pm to 4am, why I'm not in Germany? I start work at 6am I can't stay up until stupid o'clock to download a game that on any other system in the history of the world ever* I can buy whenever I want. There is no miiverse section for the game either, is that hidden until after 11pm too? What a giant cock-up.
*maybe slight exaggeration.
